Jane is an angelic song and one of her best album closers ever.

I like the song too. It is about Jane Goodall and is quite beautiful.

I imagine myself sternly admonishing her: "Stevie, you'll have to cut those nails!"

It's a pretty melody. I hum it in the shower, for some reason, or while cooking my famous Turkey Tenders with Lemon Capers. The problem with Jane is the words. Stevie is not part of the Less Is More School. She repeats "souls," "world," "angel," and "you have done so much" until you're ready to heave. The whole song is a platitude. You don't make Jane seem more angelic by saying over and over that she's an angel. There are times I despair of Stevie having little or no understatement in her lyrics—everything is overstated. Her best songs (Dreams) actually are great examples of understatement. Think of how many different layers of meaning one can pull from the subtle "Who am I to keep you down?" As a songwriter, Stevie would be better if she didn't feel the need to overdramatize every little point, and occasionally kept her visions to herself.

I love the "There are angels here, on earth" Sent from God In the eyes of the world, you have done so much! Funny part is when I bought Street Angel in 1994, I saw a song called "Jane" and instantly thought it was about Jane Petty (the inspiration to part of Edge of 17). I could never make quite sense of it LMAO

I am 12 years late to this band-wagon and I have not read all 50+ pages... these have probably already been posted by others (if so, sorry!)
-I am totally over her uniform of the platform boots, shawls, and chiffon. She admits herself that she does the same thing for every photo shoot and stage clothes. She also should change up her hair, which is stuck in the early 90s. -Stevie's FM work is faaaar superior to her solo work (and the reason is all the extra help she's had on her FM songs to make them as good as they are) -She deserves to be in the Hall of Fame for FM (which of course she is) but not as a solo artist. Her solo career just doesn't warrant it. SORRY NOT SORRY. |

100% agree. Had her solo albums all been as good as Bella Donna I would feel differently, but the others are spotty at best.

I know I was hard on her not too long ago, but I've been thinking about it for a while now and I'm starting to maybe see why she just couldn't perform with him anymore. I'm wondering if the constant tension between the two is taking a toll on her mental health. Like, I'm not saying she's going crazy. But maybe just the thought of being in the same room with him brings her panic attacks? Maybe she just can't handle it anymore.
