I had a long post in regards to this, but i deleted it because im not going to get into it. Just let me say what I originally said at the beginning of it...ho-hum. And let me say, parents, it's your job to talk to your kids about "the birds and the bees." I found much more offensive that people didn't like their kids seeing it because then they had to explain it to them. I knew about such things, I can't even remember how old I was. The more kids know, the less curious they're going to be.

A Jackson doing something silly for publicity? Nah...couldn't happen.

That's a legitimate concern. But couldn't you say that about the song's lyrics themselves, and for that matter every dance move during the song? Also, you got TV shows with people eating worms right now. I don't think there's a lot of worm-eating going on as a result.

Lastly, Janet has now admitted it was a planned stunt, though she says it was a last-minute plan.

Sure it was tacky. But I think there's far worse stuff on TV. Heads getting blown off. People eating insects. Women marrying men for money in a kind of legalized prostitution. Yet no FCC investigations into these things.

I guess I shouldn't be baffled by people's reaction to anything. But this overblown reaction to a bare breast is crazy. Justin and Janet could have danced and simulated 69 up there and as long as they kept their clothes on, there would be no FCC investigation and not even half the outrage.

I am no arguing that whole pitiful show had any redeeming value whatsoever. I am merely pointing out that some of the same people who devour highly questionable reality TV and extreme violence in network programming and in sports are terribly misguided in getting up and arms over a breast. You got kids having their dreams shattered, being humiliated in front of a national audience on American Idol and people eat that up. And let's not forget Jerry Springer (is that even on anymore) was on daytime TV. Daytime TV!

Furthermore, during the Superbowl you had commercials with a horse farting in a woman's face and a monkey hitting on a girl, the not-so-subliminal message there being bestiality. Grandpa beats grandma with a cane to get to a bag of chips and that's OK.

I don't get it. Yes, TV programming has quite questionable. But I can't help thinking that a bare breast is far less offensive that then standard fare.

You've pretty much summed up why I don't really watch network television and why I read a book instead of watching the Superbowl.

Or some of those horrible "reality shows" that are offensive because they insult my intelligence! Aaack! I'd rather watch a boob pop out any day over "My Big, Fat, Obnoxious Fiancee." No rhyme intended!

and i still can't see the problem with showing a 38 year old woman's tit on a broadcast channel's prime time.

it's not like i'm saying it ain't a problem for ME, i just don't RECOGNIZE a problem there, i honestly don't.
if you rule out any hypocritical arguments, you must realize that if Fear Factor is okay then Janet's boob is fair game.

i think it was a clever marketing stunt. janet has a new album soon to be released and lo, she's probably now the most talked-about entertainer in america at the moment.

i think people's reaction to the exposed teat is ridiculous. all the bigwigs are throwing a clot, but they should face it: the incident caused a huge spike in ratings, and surely it will increase next year's halftime show viewership (take note, ad execs). plus, no sooner had the superbowl festivities ended than we all caught sight of the great, woolly abomination that is richard hatch strutting about nude on survivor island.

i certainly hope they don't drop janet from the grammy show. i'm sure more people are planning to tune in because of her exposure.

to me, it seems like people are either upset about 1) the "message" janet's move sends out; or 2) the "indecency" of the exposure.

well, i don't think the message of the exposed breast is any different from the song's message. before dishing out the blame, cbs ought to remember that THEY approved a song whose lyrics include "i'll have you nekkid by the end of this song." why should they be so wrought about a visual to go along with the tune?

and as for the second point, who has not seen a breast? i think a lot of people are just prudes. just think: a hundred years ago, it was scandalous to expose one's ankles or knickers. in another few decades, i'm sure full nudity and swearing will be the norm on tv, which does not bother me. i don't see why people find that kind of TV so offensive--considering sexuality is the most fundamental aspect of humanity--and yet one never hears this kind of controversy over a show like Extreme Makeovers (where usually mopey or dissatisfied women are put through the rigors of extensive cosmetic surgery, and then put on display at the end during which time they always appear happy--this message seems much more dishonest and potentially harmful).

Let me see if I've got this right...

The president of the United States can lie to the whole world about his reasons for bombing a foreign country, and no one thinks it's a big deal. But a woman shows her breast on television, and the FCC is launching an investigation and the whole nation is in an uproar???

Much less Bob Dole, the like 75 year old pillar of the right and Viagra spokesperson, last year making a reference to getting sexually excited while watching a barely dressed and barely 21 year old Brittany Spears dance in a Pepsi Commerical Its all hypocritical IMO

Great point. I wish I had thought of making it.

Me, I'm all for breasts. But I've made that clear.

I second that!!! I went out to eat and just hung out with fellow anti-superbowl pals....

I got rid of cable about six months ago, and since I go to my sister's house to watch Friends, I really don't miss it one bit!!! I'm just sick of getting pissed off everytime something like this pops up...or just from simply watching...

I just have to say that America needs to grow up already. Oooh, one of Janet Jackson's boobs graced the television for all of two seconds. It's the end of the world and all things holy.

I mean, every time I go to Canada, I'm amazed at what I see on television. I've seen full frontal nudity and a slew of four letter words on broadcast television up there. Ironically, there's less violence up there. In fact, it's just the opposite! Crossing the Ambassador Bridge is quit surreal. In under two minutes, one goes from being in one of the most dangerous areas of North America to one of the safer areas of North America. Why? Because the violent criminals are at home with their pants around their ankles watching soft-core porn on broadcast television!!

In all seriousness, I find the FCC rules insulting. From the day Americans are brought into the world, we're told about freedom of speech. Yet, my government thinks I should be limited in what I can see and hear on television and radio. They don't think that as an adult I'm able to decide for myself what I want to see or hear. What's free about that?

Amen brother! You are preaching to the choir! BTW the pretzeldent told Colin Powell's son there at the FCC that Ms. Jackson if you're nasty shouldn't be prosecuted.
