As well he should be. I think Mike Vernon did a lot to advance Christine's career at the time. I still think of the wording he used at the time -- that Chris was "an incredible blues pianist that you just have to see." I think it's too bad Chris herself is so down on the album. I'll bet she hasn't actually listened to it in a really long time. What's her involvement in the release of the BH sessions, if any? I don't suppose she actually owns the rights to any of that music?

To be fair to Chris, I don't think her first solo effort is nearly as good as her performances on the Chicken Shack records, where her voice sounded more relaxed and assured. There, too, she was prone to some fine acoustic piano fills. On the solo album, she seems to be moving away from that comfort zone, transitioning into a more malleable musical voice. It's still a very good record. But her Chicken Shack recordings (and her piano work on Mr. Wonderful!) are, to my way of thinking, far superior.

Thanks for the info, Sharon. I have a feeling it will be worth it just for Mike Vernon's liner notes alone. His liner notes in that Chicken Shack box set are fantastic! He gave a great, complete history of Chicken Shack.

I got an e-mail from Amazon that this CD is temporarly out of stock & will ship when they get a new shipment of CDs in. Unfortunately, I've got to wait a bit more to get my copy.

Out of stock already?! Don't tell me it's selling more than In the Meantime.

The 'Complete Blue Horizons Sessions' is also in the catalogue at CD Universe, for $18.69 (a cheaper price than Amazon), but it is also listed as backordered there. The link:

Question

Not to be lazy aleuzzi but Sharon's spot on, not much I can add to what she said on this so hope that helps.

Anyone know if Chris' vocal on the single version of "I'm Too Far Gone" from this is different to the vocal of it she did on the album?

This was my first time hearing it and I couldn't tell if they just remixed it and added the horns etc. or if she did a dif vocal for it (like the single version of the Shack's "When The Train Comes Back") or not.

John

I believe it's the same vocal, just with the horns added. I prefer the album version.

This CD seems to be back in stock at Amazon. It is also in stock at CD Universe for the better price of $18.39, where I just ordered my copy.

I just got an e-mail this afternoon from Amazon. They shipped my CD today. Hopefully, I'll have it by the end of this week. I got it at the original price of $18.99 with free shipping.

It sounds like they got more orders than they expected. They didn't have enough in stock on the initial release date.

Reading the liner notes, I'd like someone to ask Christine about that short period of time after "Sounds of Blue," when she had to go back out and get a job as a window dresser. How depressed was she? Did she think she was just between gigs or did she fear that was the end of her dream of having a musical career?

I just think it's interesting, because we always hear a lot about how Stevie and Lindsey got dropped from Polydor and felt discouraged and I don't know anything about that early time in Chris' life. Guess she wondered what to do with that sculpture degree.

Christine herself has said Sounds of Blue were a "terrible" band and that she was playing bass. I don't think they had a recording contract. She might even have still been at college at that time. She worked as a window dresser in a London store who's name escapes me at the moment and she got the call to join Chicken Shack. The rest as they say is history.

I once knew the name of that store, but I can't recall it now. It was on Regent Street in London's West End. Christine has said she worked as a window dresser with "a bunch of bitchy people." In the documentary she softens the experience by saying it was "a very high class store, of course." But when she got the call from Stan Webb to join Chicken Shack she said "I'll do it, I'll do anything to get out of here."

This is excellent to hear...and not a little ironic as Christine is once again pained to see that album of songs just will not go away!

I think the store might have been Mappin & Webb. I've just looked them up and they are on Regent Street.

"Bunch of bitchy people". I think our Tea Lady prefers working with men
