Uncut's Top 20 Double Albums of All Times
In this month's Uncut magazine, they selected the Top 20 Double Albums of All Times. Tusk is number 8. Personally, I think it should be higher! Some of the albums before it on the list I personally disagree with: 6. OUTKAST, 7. SMASHING PUMPKINS, AND 4. Primal Scream. No way they should be ranked over Tusk. Well, I AM glad that they are finally getting the some of the recognition they deserves for Tusk. Well, anyway, here is the list. Happy Viewing!
Uncut's Top 20 Double Albums As part of our recent special on the making of the Jimi Hendrix classic Electric Ladyland, Uncut contributor Barney Hoskyns compiled a list of what he thought were the greatest double albums in rock history, which we reprint below. (The article stated that this list was albums that were the best, aside from Electric Ladyland.) 1 THE ROLLING STONES Exile On Main St 2 STEVIE WONDER Songs In the Key Of Life 3 TODD RUNDGREN Something/Anything 4 PRIMAL SCREAM Screamadelica 5 BOB DYLAN Blonde On Blonde 6 OUTKAST Spearkerboxx/The Love Below 7 SMASHING PUMPKINS Mellon Collie And the Infinite sadness 8 FLEETWOOD MAC Tusk 9 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE MAGIC BAND Trout Mask Replica 10 LED ZEPPELIN Physical Graffiti 11 HUSKER DU Zen Arcade 12THE BEATLES The White Album 13 PRINCE Sign ‘O’ The Times 14 MILES DAVIS Bitches Brew 15 PIL Metal Box 16 PREFAB SPROUT Jordan: The Comeback 17 THE CLASH London Calling 18 DEREK AND THE DOMINOS Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs 19 THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION Freak Out! 20 MARVIN GAYE Here, My Dear

Re: Uncut's Top 20 Double Albums of All Times
I agree with most of the titles listed, But I would like to know just how is Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" placed higher than The Beatles "White Album"? And where exactly is Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Yes' "Tales From Topographic Oceans" & the Who's "Quadrophenia" on this list? (These albums were considered double albums back in the day.)
Why I agree with Prince's "Sign O' The Times" making the grade, IMHO I think Outkast's release hasn't been around long enough to be considered worthy of this list. This critic needs to check out more double albums IMO because he MISSED a ton of classics.

Where the hell is Genesis's "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway?" That's the double concept to end all double concept albums! "The Wall" isn't on there? No "Quadrophenia?" What a crock of ****! Oh yeah, "Tommy" too!
And why in flaming hell are Fleetwood Mac, Captain Beefheart, and The Stones way above The Beatles White ALbum? That is just rediculous. Something/Anything is full of filler and probably my least favorite album of Todd's. One thing is that I'm happy to see such a high placing for Mellan Collie...which in my opinion is the only album my generation got that ranks with the ambitious and intellegent 70's classics. New prog-rock band the Flower Kings have several double CD's that I like just as much, if not more than the 70's prog classics like Yes and Genesis. A band called Spocks Beard had a double concept album released within the last couple years called "Snow" which I thnk sucks but a lot of other prog fans really like it. That is just a bull**** list they made for the hell of making a list. This is obviously from an American magazine. Last edited by EricBliss12345; 02-29-2004 at 08:21 PM.. |

I totally agree with you guys on the fact that the White Album by the Beatles should be listed way higher! I should have mentioned that earlier.

Well, I think it's an interesting list. It's amazing that Tusk gets so much credit. And for me, Physical Graffiti is the best thing Led Zep has ever done, and the White Album has Obladi oblada on it. THE reason why it shouldn't be in this list at all!!
And a nice thing for Lindsey is that even London Calling is behind him!!! gerald

Where are they? Looking over the Lamb tracklist I really can't find any. Disc one is sheer perfection the whole way through. On an entire run-through disc two can drag a little in places but nothing on it constitutes terrible clunkenness. Even noise jams like "The Waiting Room" turn into something cool after a while. When "The Light Dies Down On Broadway" kicks in doesn't it make it worth the wait anyways? Does for me. That's the most perfect reprise ever. [] As far as Tommy, I have the whole thing live from the Deluxe Live At Leeds edition and I can't say it sustains my attention. The first 3 and last 3 songs of Quadrophenia are just fawking brilliant and I play them often. Besides 5:15 and maybe a couple other ones I can't say I like a whole lot of that one either. Did somebody say something about "Ob La Di Ob La Da" making the White Album a little sucky? Bah humbug!!!!! Oh yeah...where's "Metal Machine Music?" |

Also MIA: Elton John-Goodbye Yellowbrick Road
Beatles white album should be no lower than #2 (if and only if Exile On Main Street is #1) Sure, Jimi's Electric Ladyland was good, but it is NOT the "be-all; end-all" of double albums. It would be in my Top 10, but not my Top 5. My list: 1) Beatles-White Album 2) Stones-Exile On Main St 3) Derek & The Dominos-Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs 4) Cream-Wheels Of Fire 5) Fleetwood Mac-Tusk 6) The Who-Tommy 7) Bob Dylan-Blonde On Blonde 8 ) Elton John-Goodbye Yellowbrick Road 9) The Who-Quadrophenia 10) Jimi Hendrix-Electric Ladyland Bubbling under the top 10: The Clash-London Calling Pink Floyd-Ummagumma Stevie Wonder-Songs In The Key Of Life Todd Rundgren-Something/Anything (with a guest appearance by one Rick Vito) At one time were good, but now are boring to listen to: Pink Floyd-The Wall Genesis-Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Yes-Tales Of Topographic Oceans They didn't even consider double LIVE albums? Whassup wit dat? What about these gems: Allman Bros Band-Live At The Fillmore Derek & The Dominos-In Concert The Beach Boys-In Concert Humble Pie-Rockin' The Fillmore Peter Frampton-Frampton Comes Alive Ten Years After-Recorded Live Mountain-Twin Peaks Traffic-On The Road Grateful Dead-Live/Dead Jethro Tull-Bursting Out Fleetwood Mac-Live (1980) Eric Clapton-24 Nights David Bowie-David Live Rolling Stones-Love You Live And, what about TRIPLE ALBUMS? George Harrison-All Things Must Pass Emerson Lake & Palmer-Welcome Back My Friends... Yes-Yessongs Leon Russell-Leon Live Grateful Dead-Europe '72.

>>>>>>>>>“TUSK" is timeless! It's rock 'n romance. I'm also happy Buckingham is getting more recognition he deserves for his masterpiece!
...........I like the way Buckingham used wavering instrumentation and the group members’ harmony vocals to simulate an orchestra and choir throughout the beautiful album!!! |

20 double albums...
ChiliD...We agree with your thoughtful list!!!
Nice recognition for Lindsey... after all the guff he took for "his masterpiece" TUSK! Rather sad he had to Go Insane as The Mac blamed him for low sales! Now, of course Mick loves Tusk!!! Congrats! Sky

Blonde on Blonde 5th?! Sheesh it might be the 5th best ALBUM of all time, period! And no mention so far of The River by Bruce Springsteen?! What's up with that? How about It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison, one of the best live albums ever. These lists are fun to read but they sure can make you wonder sometimes.

Uh....why aren't The White Album and Physical Graffiti higher? That's ridiculous.

I think Tommy has a few very weak parts in it; such as "Welcome" or the whole "Underture" debacle that just lasts too long. It was better when they played it live and left those off.
But The Lamb doesn't sustain its momentum completely anyway. The whole "Riding The Scree" bit for Tony Banks isn't anything but useless show-offing. The same (for all instrumentalists) could be said for "The Waiting Room". The only perfect double albums for me? The White Album and Tusk of course. Quote:
I'm waiting for someone to make a case for quadruple albums, such as Chicago IV.
