Default Cartoon penguins

Two questions...

1. Who is the cartoonist behind the cute penguins in the 1975 and Rumours albums?

I looked for a cartoonist credit on the LPs and the CDs and haven't found one.

2. How many drawings are there all together?

I have counted six... four from the 1975 white album, one for Rumours, plus one french penguin very likely by a different artist for Mirage. It would be cool if there could have been some comic strips with these birds...

I have no idea, but I'd love to know.

I'm seriously considering getting a small penguin tattoo. Can't decide on which FM penguin to get though. Probably just the classic "crystal ball" one, but the White album ones are also cool.

It wasn't that Larry Vigon guy? Or his brother? For some reason the name Vigon is sticking in my head.

These weren't exactly used on an album so I'm not sure if you want to include them in the count, but a few more Mac related penguins: on the Tusk remixes 12-inch, on the Tusk backstage passes (some of them used one of the Rumours penguins beneath a picture of the band, but others had a more cartoonish penguin in front of a little island) the little guy on the Mirage backstage passes (smoking & wearing a beret while carrying French bread and riding a bike), and a very detailed Humpty-Dumpty looking penguin dressed in a pinstripe suit that was used as a promo poster. A bit of a stretch, but also the animated ice-skating penguins used in a Rumours tv commercial. I think I saw a couple of the animation cells from that for sale somewhere once. There's probably more... I forgot how much the band has used this symbol over the years!

If I get some extra time I could make scans of the penguins from my LPs.

I saw a Tusk promo but thought at the time it was just a reusing of a 1975 penguin.

I'm just completely guess-less about artist even after looking through a book with '70s L.A. based record cover art. Not Mouse & Kelly... who knows, maybe an underground comix cartoonist?

Default Penguins

There is also the Garris penguin. From what I undserstand, he drew the penguins that were used around Tusk era. I am under the impression that this one attached here was comissioned, used, but that the artist was not paid for his work, so any use of it was not ok. That's why I got the print. LOVE penguins, and thought the story was interesting...but that's just what I understand. Unsure of whether it's accurate or not. Any insider knowledge???

The FM/Rumours penguins are cute - but don't forget the Mirage one:

I couldn't find the color pic, sorry.
