A Brazilian woman has given birth to a baby weighing a whopping 17lbs - the average size of a six month old.

Nicknamed "Big Baby", Ademilton dos Santos was born by Caesarian section to Francisca Ramos dos Santos, 38, in Cajazeiras, north eastern Brazil.

Doctors claim the baby is large due to his mother's diabetes, and the newborn has what is known as "diabetes in maternity", a form of hypoglycaemia.

The baby has been given a glucose solution to help him maintain a safe blood sugar level.

Doctors at the Albert Sabin Hospital, where the baby was born, say it is common for women with diabetes to give birth to large babies.

And according to the Brazilian Gynaecological Association, Ademilton is the heaviest baby ever born in Brazil.

At least she had a c-section, but damn, that still hurts. Can you imagine how big that cut had to be to get this kid out??? I heard last night that he's the size of a three-month old!

I don't feel sorry for the mother. It's her own fault for not controlling her diabetes. Sure, it is hard to do at times, but 17 lbs is a bit much and it shows her noncomplience. Porr baby, though...

I don't know...maybe she didn't have the means for proper medical care?

That's a bit of a sweeping statement IMO. Do you know anything about gestational diabetes?

I am a nurse. From the article, it sounds like she already had diabetes and it wasn't caused by the pregnancy. It's a little foggy, though. I took it as she already had it.

I missed that. You are right.. she already had it. I'm sure the pregnancy must make it worse though, do you think?
