Default Question about Gypsy "You Say Hey Hey Baby"

Ok this is a really dumb question, but I'm legitimately perplexed and I am not sure where else to ask LOL!

I'm a pretty decent size Stevie fan - and I understand many of the moments us fans love

-the cheers when she twirls
-the cheers for the howl during GDW and EO17
-we all love the "Stand Back" high kick...

And I absolutely love the 24K film and album much more than I expected to. It's really solid and there's some really powerful moments... "Gypsy" actually never was one of my favorites live but they kinda nailed it here.

But...why are fans going crazy over the "you say hey hey baby" part during the chorus? It's definitely not my favorite ad lib by far. Every time that passes in the film/album you hear the crowd going crazy. It's killing my vibe! Why is that a Stevie moment now?

I am guessing maybe there's really no reason - or Stevie loves that part so she brought the crowd up in the mix on the album? If there's something I'm missing I sincerely wanna know.

Okay hey hey baby?

I love Stevie but I find that part SO cringeworthy
I feel like the audience screaming is greatly (& inexplicably) punched up there, drawing more attention to just how cringey it is.
Sorry Stevie, just my 2 cents, lol.

It's like her gypsy is driving by in her limo, and Stevie is waving at her!

Agree with you all that little "Ad-lib" is cringeworthy and dumb. Almost ruins the song. I really don't get why she felt the need to add it to her solo setlist. Bleh.

Okay hey hey baby?
So at the shows I went to, I got the impression that it wasn't the "you say hey hey baby" that made the fans yell, but the fact that she waves at the audience while she sings it.

I agree and the fans wave back.

I think this started on Live 2013 or On With the Show, so it's not something she started for the 24 Karat Gold Tour. What she started on 24KG was singing lower on "I have only love!"

I think Stevie does stuff like this to songs she sings every time she performs live to make it a little more exciting for her. I.E. "Tell me now" and "you can't stake me out, take me down" in GDW, "Hey baby you can never look me in the eye" "Ooh say face to face" "Why don't you still cry out for her"

I didn't catch the wave during that part when I saw it live or in the movie but rewatching it I see it now.

That's cute, I can live with that. Thanks for the answers!!!

Also, call me crazy, but why is this my favorite live version of "Gypsy" of all time? It never worked for me on Mirage tour or even on "The Dance" - but something about this version really does it for me. Even more so now that I understand the "hey hey baby" wave. <3
