Green Manalishi was covered by a lot of heavy rock bands (e.g Nirvana, Judas Priest, Alice in Chains and mentioned above and many others).
Greeny's composition has a big rock potential and is still performed by many bands.
But young people often think it is a Judas Priest cover .

Thanks for the links, kowk. I'm familiar with the Melvins version - which I like quite a bit - and was aware of a one or two of the others you mentioned. I'll have to check them out.

I'm sure that some bands have based their cover versions on the Judas Priest cover, but it's pretty clear to me that the Melvins version is based on the original. I think they really get the feel of the song, which some other cover versions - the Judas Priest version for example - fail to do.

The problem I always had with the covers was the over application of "heavy" by the covering artists.

The FM GM was beautiful in that it starts with a certain weight, but by the end, it is a coda soaring on the wails of PG's voice and playing, emphasizing the frightening dream-like theme of the song.

Most covers approach it with a sledgehammer sensibility, robbing the song of its emotional weight and replacing it with a ponderous tone.

It was a haunting swan song of the genius of the original FM.

I couldn't agree more, and you hit the nail right on the head damianip.
The same goes for mentions of PG as "the father of heavy guitar rock". Couldn't be further from the truth.

Ms. Moose, not sure why you object to that if some people feel that way. Everyone listens to music differently and takes away different impressions from it. There's no single "right" way to hear his music, or anyone else's for that matter. I don't happen to feel that Greeny is "the father of heavy guitar rock" either but based on "The Green Manalishi" alone, I can see why other people could have that view, and the influence that piece had on heavy guitar rock is easy to hear. I'd guess that it's had far more influence on other musicians than "Albatross" or "Man Of The World", for instance.

I think we should celebrate all of the musical influence that Peter Green's work (and Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch, etc.) had on others, even though we may not all appreciate the way some others have interpreted his music.

I agree Peter was one of the most tasteful and restrained guitarist, but as a composition GM is , I believe, a proto heavy metal song (interesting to know whether Paranoid came first ??!!,),and so in this particular case, Peter's guitar playing ,in the rhythm bits (even if he didn't play all of them on stage -he did invent them ) are very heavy rock .

Where the heavy metal bands covering it go disasterously wrong is that they think faster is "heavier ",and loose the spookiness ,and anguish of it ,which is why the Marvins, who I know nothing at all about ,have made a fair stab at it .I quite like their version- a little bit too slow at points for me - but very unsettling and interesting .

I remember reading somewhere, and sorry if this seems a bit apocryphal, a journalist saying that PG was probably the only guitarist who turned his guitar volume down for a solo.

A testament to the restraint and emotion that was essential to his playing.

As far as heavy metal and the similar genres go, I tend to equate them with posturing rather than genuine emotion in composition and performance.

I know that this a rather "wide brush" to portray an entire genre, but that is my admittedly biased impression (no doubt my prejudice was irrevocably cemented by "This is Spinal Tap").

Many people trhink it's a Judas Priest Composition!

None of these bands credited the composer in their introductions (Frank Sinatra would have! -now there's a though Frank covering GM -- no---- it wouldn't have worked !)

Nor did the posters of the You Tube clips credit Peter as the composer !
