Tori Amos gives away 'Maybe California' mp3

Mother's Day is still a week or so away, but Tori Amos is getting started early. The baroque-pop singer and songwriter is making an early Mother's Day gift of "Maybe California," a tune from her forthcoming album "Attracted to Sin," due out May 19.

In a heartfelt (if not well-edited) message on her website, she writes, "There are people in our lives, and we all know them, that are able to give even in the darkest of times. Even when they seem depleted. But somehow by giving, they gain this magical light. Even the most giving person needs a gift every once and a while, just to know they are seen and appreciated. 'Maybe California' is my gift to you."

In exchange for signing up for Amos' e-mail list, you can download the song, the video and even a ringtone. Get it here.

I am so excited for the album! I was sort of disappointed by American Doll Posse, even though I think the tour was among the best of her career. I was lucky enough to see her at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in October 2007. I'm not that impressed by "Maybe California," but I am loving Give, Welcome to England, and Curtain Call. The latest solo performances of Lady in Blue have all been incredible too.

I didn't like ADP either but yes, the tour rocked!! I saw her in Florida the night before Thanksgiving and it was a great show! I read a not so great review of Sin but I really like what I've heard so far. And the visualettes/videos are fantastic!

^I think this album might turn out to be a fan favorite, but one that is not critically acclaimed, kind of like Pele. It's my favorite album of all time along with Rumours and Tusk, but I remember it was panned by a lot of critics.

I remember Rolling Stone only gave Pele 2 stars and said it was just a big mess. It's definitely on my top 10 album list!

That's essentially the same 2 star review that RS gave The Wild Heart back in 1983.From the reviews I have seen about Tori's new album the critics are actually praising half the album and then saying the other half should have been edited .

And that really saddens me, if the critics are indeed correct. I always though ADP could have been an amazing album if about 6 or so songs were cut. Some of the songs sounded like they belonged on a completely different album altogether. Judging from the critics, she's made the same mistake with AATS but I will reserve judgement until I hear it for myself.

I'm always incredibly shocked when I see that review. I think it's one of the most cohesive and brilliant albums of the past 20 years. Of course, I rarely agree with critics when it comes to my favorite artists' albums.

Yeah, from what I can tell, AATS is wildly uneven, but at least it seems to be brilliantly produced, which is a step up from both TBK and ADP. They both feel rushed, despite the fact that some of the best songs of her career are on them. I just hope the AATS tour keeps up the standard she has set with the solo performances!

I think she's playing with Jon and Matt only on this tour, like the Scarlet's Walk tour. Looks like she's scaled the number of dates back quite a bit compared to the last tour.
