that I work with had no idea at all that Under The Skin or Live At Bass Hall was even out. I personally got some airtime for those releases. The second point about WB/Reprise is they sometimes treat you like they are doing you a favor when sending out promotional materials. And they are among the slowest responders in the music business, at least in my experience. That said, I am talking about Lindsey's last three releases and not OOTC. And of course they have to be realistic about sales, but I do not like a defeatest attitude. And that's exactly what WB brings to the table on some of their releases. You never win with that type of an attitude in any business. Same goes for life, at least in my experience. In the end Warner/Reprise wouldn't give Lindsey the time of day if it weren't for the back-catalog of Fleetwood Mac. And to a lesser degree a possible new album from the group. |

I would tend to agree with LukeA that WB pushed OOTC aggressively and that even fawning notices in the media were unable to give it much momentum. I do recall seeing lots and lots of print ads, reviews and interviews in mainstream rags like People and Rolling Stone as well as seeing the videos in constant rotation on VH1. But I have to admit that the first I saw/heard from OOTC was the video for "Wrong," which, fittingly enough, was the wrong song for a lead-off single. My initial impression was "WTF was that?" It's not your typical melodic, catchy Lindsey song. It was definitely quirky but really had no reason being a single, let alone an album track. "Countdown" should have been the lead off single. By the time that single/video was released, OOTC was already damaged goods.
In hindsight, I think expectations were sky high, and the assumption was that OOTC would benefit from the momentum of TITN. But that was five years ago, and Fleetwood Mac had already released an album (and somewhat sullied the FM brand) in the interim. Although five years between albums is not so unusual these days, back then it was an eternity. Without the internet to keep your fanbase alive, you were pretty much forgotten if you weren't out there recording and touring constantly. So after five years of not a peep from LiddyBuck, what was everyone expecting? Last edited by HejiraNYC; 01-04-2010 at 04:58 PM.. |
