"Blue Water" lyric mystery...
I've been listening to this demo for years...one of my favorites...but I've always had a problem trying to understand one particular line...
Blue water...i sit and i wait for the morning to come...blue water... and i wait for the sound of my gypsy...blue water (here's where it gets confusing) ...I blah blah blah blah...hidden out of sight...blue water... Now all the lyrics posted on various websites list it as being, "I sit out each night, hidden out of sight..." but that is obviously NOT what she is saying. If you listen carefully, you'll notice that the syllables are all wrong for it to be "I sit out each night". The only thing that I can seem to make out is, "I sih nahnay flah" LOL! Can someone please help me with this? It's been driving me crazy for YEARS! So much that I've even busted out the headphones, cranked the volume (even on the crisp, clear master demo) and rewound the one line over and over again to try to make sense of what it is. HELP! |

It sounds like (somethingsomething) and flight, tho that doesn't make much sense.

I hear flight too. I can't figure it out. I think it's something like "I see nights flight".

I always sang, "I'm hidden on inside, sittin' out of sight, blue water"

I always think it says "I sit out of sight" even though it doesn't make sense to say "hidden out of sight" in the next line because they are both the same thing. I sit out in flight could be another option, but that doesn't make much sense.

That gets my vote. For a moment, I thought it was literally a song about nautical themes... But the whole thing just reeks of drugs to me. So the variations of "I sit on a flight," "I'm sitting on a flight," "I sit and a fly," etc. are just iterations of "I'm about to get high, dude, and I'm keepin' it on da DL." Oh, and there's "I'm in high tide," "I wanna take you on a slow ride," "I won't give up the night" (as in nightshade 'shrooms, perhaps?), etc.
Blue Water? It's more like Bong Water! |

I haven't played BW in a while but I always thought it was about Robin. Isn't there a line that goes "I wait for the sound of my gypsy". (she was left the lone gypsy when Robin passed). There also mention of the slow ride and wanting to sail the sea (Stevie, Robin and I think Sharon went to Hawaii as a "farewell" trip and I believe there were some shots of them on a boat). And finally the line about wanting to be your friend...and love you until the end. Just my speculation, of course. As is the case with most of Stevie's songs, it's probably about many things.

BTW - As Stevie and Sharon have both stated in various interviews, this song was written in Hawaii (1977) right after they met. Sharon was performing at a club in Lahaina with her band at the Blue Max. Stevie was in the audience and jumped on stage to sing with Sharon after they'd started singing one of Stevie's songs. After the show, Stevie introduced herself, they started talking about music and hitting it off. Sharon said that Stevie was staying at a beach house and really wished she had a piano because the ocean was inspiring her to want to write. Sharon called up a friend that night and managed to get a piano over to the beach house. In the Wild Heart interview with Jim Ladd, Stevie says they stayed up that night and wrote "Blue Water". They even sing a little bit of it for Jim. Stevie also says that's when she asked Sharon to join her band whenever her solo career got off the ground. I remember in a different interview with Sharon, she said that when Stevie asked her to join her band, Sharon laughed and said, "No problem!" |
