NBC's Tom Brokaw to Sign Off on December 1
Mon Apr 19,12:02 PM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters TV to My Yahoo!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tom Brokaw, the face of "NBC Nightly News" since 1983, will retire on Dec. 1, the network said on Monday.

The next evening, Brian Williams, who was named as Brokaw's successor in May 2002, is expected to take over as anchor and managing editor of the show. Williams joined NBC News in 1993.

Brokaw, a former host of NBC's "Today" show and White House correspondent who joined NBC News in 1966, had been expected to retire at some point following this November's U.S. presidential election.

A best-selling author of four books including 1998's "The Greatest Generation," Brokaw has also been seen by many as a potential candidate for elected office. Earlier this year, he denied any interest in running for vice president as a Democrat after a suggestion to that effect by columnist John Fund.

NBC is a unit of General Electric Co. .

I always thought he seemed half-cocked when he did the news.

Tom Brokaw?!? -_-

I really like Tom a lot. I thought he was a great journalist. I don't mind Brian Williams but I wonder if he can carry the news like Brokaw

My question is how long will Bob Barker be doing the Price Is Right for. He's over 80 now. Pretty soon he's going to be saying come on down in a wheelchair.

He's my favorite of the Big Three, though I seldom watch any of them.

Mine too! I like the way he delivers the news. I'm sad he's leaving! I also like Peter Jennings a lot however. We watch both ABC news and NBC news at dinner time (depends on the day!) so I've gotten used to hearing them every night. Never really watched CBS much, so I have nothing to say about Dan Rather.

Not a minute too soon. Brokaw had a big hand in dumbing down the news in the 90s. Too much glitz. Not enough substance. Standing next to pretty graphics instead of delivering from behind a desk where anchors belong.

Then he started moonlighting to write propaganda for a generation that got us in more trouble than any other ever has. Greatest generation my ass.

Unfortunately, so much damage was done to the nightly news that no matter who takes over, it can't be undone. Williams seems decent enough. I hope he makes some improvements.

It's rather ironic that I watched "Network" last night.

Faye Dunaway scares me. Something about the face.
