John Fogerty brings out best of CCR with energy of youth

The best kept secret about a John Fogerty shows these days is that it’s Creedence Clearwater Revival all the way.

After years of acrimony between Fogerty and the rest of the legendary band from decades ago, Fogerty doesn’t play with his former band mates, and he doesn’t use their name.

But he’s playing their songs again, and he’s doing it with the energy and passion of, let’s say, a 40-year-old and not a 64-year-old.

With all due respect to the rest of CCR, Fogerty can channel his legendary back from decades ago with a backup that includes BillyFleetwood Mac) Burnette (of and Hunter Perrin on guitar, Dave Santos on bass, Kenny Aronoff on drums, Matt Nolen on keyboard and Dan Hocchalter on guitar and fiddle.

Fogerty opened Thursday’s show at the Hard Rock in Hollywood by ripping through five CCR classics – “Hey, Tonight”, “Green River”, “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”, “Lodi” and “Who’ll Stop The Rain”.

He pranced and leaped across the stage in front of a middle-aged crowd that sat for much of the show but couldn’t help but standing and dancing when he busted into “Bad Moon Rising”, “Down on the Corner” and “Fortunate Son”.

And he couldn’t have picked a better encore than closing with “Proud Mary”, leaving the audience buzzing for a show that was better than many of them had hoped for.

It wasn’t just an homage to the ’60s. After “Born on the Bayou”, Hocchalter gave a stirring fiddle solo, and Aronoff busted out the bongos for “Midnight Special”, giving a new touch to some of Fogerty’s classic songs.

Despite the venue’s 5,500-seat capacity, there were plenty of empty seats in the upper deck. When South Florida music fans see a Fogerty billboard on I-95, they’re probably thinking of the ’80s Fogerty (and he did do a few of his later songs, including “Centerfield”).

If Fogerty could sell his shows as CCR, he would fill up BankAtlantic Center. Instead, he’ll keep on doing his thing, which is a treat for music fans and a must-see if you enjoy CCR songs. And really, who doesn’t?
