OMG...I have so many favorite actresses. Here are my top three:
Bonnie Bedelia-highly underrated actress who always brings such intelligence to her roles. Favorite film: Bad Manners, 1998. Madeline Kahn-one of, if not the most brilliant comedienne to every walk this earth. She was the ultimate scene stealer. She was also so great when showing her dramatic chops as well (i.e. Judy Berlin and even Paper Moon) Favorite film: What's Up Doc?, 1972. Barbara Harris-a beautiful and unique actress who always brougt a great energy to any movie she was in. She could be funny, vulnerable, powerful and every time just so convincing. I love this woman. Favorite film: Who is Harry Kellerman and Why is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?, 1971. Well, I guess I've babbled enough.

Gloria Swanson was also a huge fav. of mine. Talk about your independant woman in the teens and 20's. Swanson was America's first real movie star. To quote Photoplay circa around 1925 - "Goria Swanson was the second movie star to earn a million dollars and the first to spend it" (Mary Pickford was the first to earn a million dollars). Swanson refused to let the studio tell her not to have her baby for it would ruin her career. She had five husbands, most of which she divorced because they were cruel and/or tried to make her submissive. She lobbied and testified before Congress in the 50's for better nutrtion in schools. She painted a day poster for the UN's Year of the Woman. She was one of the first women ever to have their own television show - "The Gloria Swanson Hour." She was an opera singer. She was nominated three times for an Academy Award ("Sadie Thompson" - which she defied the Hayes code to make and beat out every male producer who tried to stop her, "The Tresspasser" - her first talkie, and, of course, "Sunset Blvd." Interestingly, she will be immortalized as "Norma Desmond," but she was FAR more than that and certainly was not the character of Norma Desmond, although she was brilliant as her and probably could relate a little. Bette Davis and Meryl Streep could and can also do no wrong. There are others, but these stand out for me. |

I actually stole 'Cate' as a response from Lux :P
Pip - Sigourney is my pick too!
Absolutely hilarious in Galaxy Quest and brilliant in her many other (diverse!) roles. I'm also a big fan of Jodie Foster (Contact being one of my top films), but don't worry - not enough to shoot a president over! Although the current president...

I can't pick one.
I'm thinking Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jean Stapleton, Jodie Foster, Jane Alexander. Honorable Mention to Nicole Kidman - I've only seen her in The Others, but if her other performances compare... - Jake
