Default Fleetwood Mac invented goth

Great piece here. I never thought of the aural resemblances between "Big Love" and Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" (another favorite of mine, one of the most bizarre and beautiful hit singles ever). Though some critics dismiss Fleetwood Mac as glossy California soft pop, "You didn’t see the Eagles or Foreigner or Toto making records that sounded this way, or more crucially, felt this way," as this piece says. So true.

Thanks. What a great read. Nonsense and spot on at the same time.

I remember hearing Big Love for the first time.
It was late at night and I was driving with my girlfriend, and it came on the radio.
It sort of both stopped us in our tracks. She, who was not a Fleetwood Mac fan, said "wow - it sounds like Kate Bush".

I've always thought of the two songs together. It's definitely Kate's greatest song from her greatest album. But I don't consider her or Fleetwood Mac goth.

Spoon's new great single "Hot Thoughts" is in the same league as Running Up That Hill.

If you read the piece, you'll see that it is not the premise of the article.

True.

"Invented goth" is too strong. But I appreciate how the writer separates FM from The Eagles... that was never a fair comparison. They were only competitive contemporaries; the music is not remotely similar, particularly from "Rumours" on.

A bit more leaning towards nonsense for me.
I hate it when people try to draw parallels between Rumours and Tusk. They always completely omit any reference to The White album. Rumours is very much an extension of Fleetwood Mac, albeit a bigger, better brother. Though I appreciate some of Lindsey's aural leanings from Tusk can be traced back to Rumours, its as if people think Rumours popped out of nowhere. Though recorded relatively quickly (which is actually akin to the approach of true 70's/80's goth music), Fleetwood Mac also had elements of left-field creativity. Add to that, Rhiannon is more Goth (in more than one sense) than pretty much anything else they've ever done.

I'd say that the nearest Kate got to the Fleetwood Mac "sound" would be How To Be Invisible & Nocturn from Aerial.
