I'm having a little old-school Madonna listening party all by myself.

It's fun.

Good call! I always say that Madonna had 14 untouchable years ('84 - '98) and has then been patchy to say the least. I'm not keen on her newer material at all so old-school is always the best. My favourite albums are Like A Prayer, Something To Remember and Bedtime Stories.

What have you been playing?

Those *are* the best years, for certain. I was listening to stuff from Like A Prayer, Ray Of Light, American Life and Confessions - really just watching videos on YouTube (I started with Vogue and Express Yourself) and seeing where the links led me. I love the video for Hollywood!

Admittedly, even though I find her older material to be above reproach, I actually prefer her American Life and Confessions material the most when it's just me listening. Hard Candy...meh...there are a few tracks that are great - Devil Wouldn't Recognize You is probably the standout track on that album - but I don't care for most of the songs. I don't dislike them - rather I am apathetic about them.

Which reminds me, I need to pull out Erotica and give that a full spin this weekend. I don't think I've listened to it in ages. Even better would be to find a vinyl copy - I wonder if they even were pressed? I have every intention of buying myself a quality turn-table for Christmas.

I find myself worrying a bit about her upcoming release. Gaga has totally filled the musical niche that Madonna once occupied. Madonna has her fashion designs and clothing labels, she makes hundreds of millions from touring, she's directing - in sum she really has no reason to make music other than the fact that she's contractually obligated. There's no reason for her to care about hit songs, chart status, or critical acclaim. Because of this I fear that her new material will only continue to reflect her disinterest in her own musical legacy.

Erotica is such an underrated album. It's a shame that it got dwarfed (Madonna's own fault) by the Sex book and Body of Evidence etc because there are some great tracks on it. Deeper and Deeper, Bad Girl (fantastic video!), Rain...

My guitar and I were listening and learning
a few songs from the recently released:
The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams.
A great CD, especially Jack White and Alan
Jackson's contributions.

My Dad is playing Christmas songs downstairs in the kitchen. Not a problem. You know what the problem is? He has "When A Child Is Born" on repeat. I hate this song. Not the way I say I hate Justin Bieber. It's the sort of hate that fills you with so much unadulterated rage that you just want to burn things.

Thomas Dolby's new album A Map of the Floating City. Excellent album. Some really great stuff here.
