latin playboys, anyone? It's a two album collaboration 'project' between members of Los Lobos and Mitchell Froom, got into them because I really like Los Lobos. Some pretty offbeat crazy stuff on those records, I'd say But very catchy in an odd way.

I haven't. Is that the new one? I thought I heard they had something new coming out. I haven't really kept up on them, but I have MUCH mad love for God Ween Satan, Pure Guava, and Chocolate and Cheese, especially GWS!
I mean how can you deny the poetry of 'You ****ed Up"? I can't tell you how many times those words have gotten me through some really difficult times. I should pick up some of their newer stuff.

And they're the local boys! They come from a town only about a half hour north of me! Love it when the local kids make you proud...

Ha! Yeah, they're great. I love all those albums you mentioned and have a special soft spot in my heart for The Pod--it was the first thing I ever heard from them and it knocked me out! You should pick up a copy of Quebec (I believe it was released in 2003). It's my favorite album of theirs to date. I think you'd really like it. I especially love the song, "If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)" from that album. My sig quote is a line from that song. Here, I'll include the lyrics because I love it so (where's that lyrics thread??):

On a free ride home from the embassy
I saw the governor, and his lover holding hands
When I got to my place, I emptied my suitcase
And opened the windows wide

If you could save yourself, you'd save us all
Is that what you called me for, is that why you're knocking on my door?
The time I've spent, working myself to death
Thought that's what you wanted
I thought you needed my help
To make it good again, to make us strong
To make you happy, to push you along
And gain some respect, to be thrown a crumb
I was on my knees, when you knocked me down

The wheels fell off, the bottom dropped out
The checks all bounced, I came in your mouth
Your mother came calling but there was no one around
The trash caught fire when the leaves turned brown
The vultures were circling when the circus left town
I left you a note but I wrote it in disappearing ink

If you could save yourself, you'd save us all
Is that what you called me for, is that why you're knocking on my door?
The time I've spent, working myself to death
Thought that's what you wanted
I thought you needed my help
To make it good again, to make us strong
To make you happy, to push you along
And gain some respect, to be thrown a crumb
I was on my knees, when you knocked me down

Ahhh, now I feel better! Great song. Great album

That's how I feel about GWS...I'm sitting here looking at the case and GAWD I forgot how much I love the ENTIRE album! ::Puts it on::...hopefully my husband and daughter will stay in the backyard for a little while...

The Pod, that's the one that they modeled after some Leonard Cohen album cover right? You suppose they're big LC fans?

Those lyrics are fantastic. I'm definitely gonna pick up that album. Of course it's no I got a weazel; it's a teazel; mah pleazel; mah pleazel; got a weazel Oh God thanks for giving me a reason to listen to this again...

Tee-hee. Yeah, there are still those kinds of songs on the album, but they (as is usually the case with them) fit in nicely sandwiched between really straightforward, melodic masterpieces. Their albums are so surreal, you know going in without even hearing the album that you've never heard anything like this before. You just know it! Yes, do get Quebec and let me know what you think!

I just got their last album, that's the first one of them I've heard. But it's great (and definitely offbeat).

What's the album you're talking about? Any recommendations?

I know it's incredibly damaging to my indie cred, but the Lips have never really done it for me. I'd love to see them in concert, though.

I love Los Lobos, a great live band too. I will have to look for the Playboys. Mitchell Froom, a name from the past! There was a line in Rosalie from By The Light Of The Moon (1987) about 'The Latin Playboys And The Sky Room Shows'. I imagined it was some L.A. dance band. Also like Los Super Seven.

Los Super Seven! Like them too. I guess Latin Playboys would be the opposite direction for a side project, so be prepared
yeah, they're great live, got the chance to see them live a few years ago.
