It was most likely used in those two spots to clean up something that was either slightly sharp or flat. But that's it. You can't hear anymore auto-tune. I'm amused at your choice of words "unfamiliar" and "too pitch perfect". This is the most "familiar" Stevie vocal I've heard in quite a long time. Her vocal nuances - like her 3 note downward run on the last "hangin' round", the way she gets a little quiet during the "other lover's dreams" part, her trademark inability to sustain certain words without dropping into another harmonic key, and my favorite - the last time she says the word "moon" while harmonizing with Don at 3:21. Goosebumps! Only Stevie would choose the dissonant note within the corresponding chord and run with it! Just my opinion. |

[Excerpt from Don Henley article. Well, who asked you how much you saw her, Don? Jumping the gun, a little.]
By Jennifer Selway Express Co.uk PUBLISHED: 00:00, Sat, Sep 26, 2015 http://www.express.co.uk/entertainme...st-much-longer He sings with artists he admires such as Mick Jagger, Dolly Parton and there's one track on which he shares vocals with his former lover Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. "I don't see her much," he says gruffly. |

Would it be proper for me to call my ex-girlfriends former lovers? I guess it's better than crack whores. |

LOL... well, it could also be that he just wanted to shut down that line of inquiry from the reporter. Maybe something to do with his Southern upbringing as he mentions, where you are raised not to blab about or inquire about certain things.
Stevie always says she couldn't write a book because there are certain people who would be upset, and that she has to wait until they're too old to care anymore what stories she might spill. Sounds like Grumpy is one of them.

I heard it on youtube and will get the CD at Target.I agree with the poster that wrote that her contribution here is similar to "Smiling Islands"It would seem that Stevie is willing to record with anyone but Fleetwood Mac

Nice performance. Don Henley still sounds great.
While it be nice if there were more Stevie, it makes sense that she comes on in the end if you follow the lyrics. Don is associated with the sun and Stevie with the moon in the relationship portrayed in the song. I didn't know this song before, but I learned it dates back to Garth Brooks wearing a wig as the "rock star" Chris Gaines in the late 90s. He didn't write it either. It's written by the people who wrote Eric Clapton's "Change the World." I like that one too. Last edited by brad975; 09-29-2015 at 09:45 AM.. |

Because he's married and probably doesn't want to rock that boat.

I always wondered why it was never billed as a duet. Anyone know why? Stevie is billed on the album and when I hear it on the radio it's usually introduced as Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks. But because she is not on the single, I had trouble finding the record in stores back in the day - especially since I never knew the actual title and just guessed it was called Sweet Love Showing Us A Heavenly Light lol.

Perhaps nowadays it is because SN is a musical Legend now. But during its heyday and all through the 80's, 90's & 00's they very rarely ever said her name. It used to tick me off to no end. LOL

I, too, always thought it was strange that Stevie wasn't credited at all on the "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'" single.
I have the album (just for that song) and she's credited with "harmony vocals" But aside from the choir of Kennys on the intro, the song is absolutely a full-fledged duet. Maybe she didn't push for credit because she didn't co-write the song (Melissa M. did), and she was just doing a favor for a friend. Or maybe she didn't have a manager/label yet that would push for her rights as a solo act. I looked at the back of a Kenny Loggins greatest hits album once and it listed Steve Perry as a duet partner on "Don't Fight It" but no mention of Stevie with "Whenever." Maybe she was a little embarrassed by Kenny and the song. It's catchy, but a little cheesy. However, I feel like it's an important song because one of the handful of Stevie lead vocals on official releases recorded before her voice began to change (apparent on Tusk). |

Without Stevie's sweet love vocals, I don't think Whenever I Call You Friend would have gone anywhere -- certainly not anywhere with me. And I don't say that because I like her. When I first heard that song, I didn't even know it was her. Same for Magnet and Steele. Same for Gold. It's the background vocals that captured me on all of those songs, before I loved Fleetwood Mac. Gal used to turn music into gold. Michele |
