Default Two Favorite Paintings

What are your two favorite paintings of the last 150 years?

Mine are the Jardin à Sainte-Adresse:

& the Hôtel des Roches Noires:

Both by Claude Monet

This is a tough one. There are so many fabulous paintings out there! I'd have to say, though, that most anything by Frank and Herbert Dicksee and James William Waterhouse.

These two in particular:

The Gipsy Girl - Herbert Dicksee (I own a signed etching)

The Crystal Ball - JW Waterhouse

Had to throw in a 3rd also by JW Waterhouse

The painting I love most are the ones that evoke the strong emotions. And to me, the strongest emotions are loneliness, heartache and desolation, and chaos. But there are two pretty picture here too.

This is from Goya. 'Saturn devouring his son'

This is from Madame Elizabeth Vigee Lebrun. 'Self Portrait'

This is a panel from the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, the way she looks to her left evokes the feeling that she is foretelling the Coming of something huge. 'The Delphic Sybil'

Kathe Kollwitz, 'Poverty'. Most of her work features mothers with their children, often disturbing images of death and suffering.

Degas, 'Interior Scene, or, The Rape'

Also by Degas, 'The Absinthe Drinkers'. The woman looks lost in her desolation.

'Several Circles' by Kandinsky. Lovely, with wonderful movement and I like it for the silliest reason- blue is my favorite color!

One of my favorites, too. Saw a Degas exhibit, odds and ends in the hands of a handful of American collectors, in Minneapolis a few years back. Good stuff.

The Suicide of Dorothy Hale - Frida Kahlo

The Moulin Rouge - Toulouse Lautrec

I am a Renoir fanatic- there are so many beautiful nudes, still lifes (lives?) and portraits. A few of my favorites:

Roses

Mother and Child

The Picture Book

And one by Mary Cassat:

Little Girl in a Blue Armchair

I actually love ALL of Renoir's florals and I love this scenic print by Monet:

I just realized you asked for our TWO favorites. for me, probably my first two.
