I was thinking about this earlier today as I walked to get some lunch. Could we even have a functioning political system without political parties?

It's normal for like-minded people to group together and support each other...so it does seem inevitable that we ended up with political parties, but I think we could do better within the confines of a two-party system if we eliminated the actual parties and their leadership hierarchy.

OK, being a monarchist is not a smart idea.

Though we think we're divided now, we are not as divided now as we have been in the past. It all started with the debate of the creation of a national bank. Peaking with the subject of slavery. We are not as divided now as we were then. However, media presence magnifies the differences there are.

As for inflation - if you work to keep it to a minimum, companies then have more money to hire new workers, THUS lowering unemployment.

This is very true. I have found that more often than not, when I engage in polite political discourse with someone who I have differences with, we often find that we agree on far more than we expected to.

"You scored 0% which means you are
a hardcore liberal. You believe in governmental action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all, and that it is the duty of the State to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Believe that people are basically good."

I am not surprised at all by my results!

Cool Hmmm...

"You scored 67% which means you are moderately conservative. You believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values."

I laugh at my result...

The founders didn't like it, but the formation of political parties happened very early on in U. S. history (by early on, I mean by the time of the 2nd presidential election). The two-party system was an inevitability simply because of the way our elections work - namely, they're decided based on a plurality of the vote rather than a majority. And at this point, they are so ingrained into the electoral college system itself, that it's basically impossible to change.

It's not bad in and of itself, but it's devolved to the point that the legislative branch of the U. S. government is completely broken. Not only do the elected officials comprising it have no interest in fixing it, they personally benefit by its not working.

I got the same, and was shocked. I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore at alll. In fact, I was expecting it to say I was straddling the line b/t liberal and conservative or something. Weird.

One of the truest statements - something to consider:

"I've noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born".

...and the vast majority of people voting on the individual rights of women consists of men. So what is your point exactly?

I'm not saying I agree with it. I just came across it and it kind of struck a nerve.

I figured that I would be almost right down the middle.

Excellent point. It is true that men benefit greatly from the abortion-law status quo. Well, to Musicman's point: living heterosexual men benefit.
