well, I'm also a native New Yorker, I also travel and live in Europe par of the year and I remember the energy crisis in the 70's. my parent's Ford station wagon had an even plate while our Nova had an odd plate...

I have always driven a small fuel-efficient car and just love to watch the SUV's fill up forever at the gas station while I am 10 gallons and gone!!!

sometimes it seems I was the only one paying attention to the crying Indian commercials in the 70's...

did you see the oil companies all lined up in a row testifying at a Senate commitee on CSPAN???...a bunch of old smug white men with golden parachutes getting chewed out by a young Democrat white woman from FL...what fun!!!

and their answer: that the only way to reduce prices now is to allow them to drill in the US...

Think you pay a lot for gas? Perhaps you'd prefer to live in Venezuela.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – Gasoline prices in the United States, which have recently hit record highs, are actually much lower than in many countries. Drivers in some European cities, like Amsterdam and Oslo, are paying nearly 3 times more than those in the U.S.

The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc.

In a few Latin America and Middle-East nations, such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, oil is produced by a government-owned company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the nation's citizens, he said.

I just put a picture of that Indian on my wall a couple of days ago. I think his name was Cody. He was crying over litter, not gas prices.

So most of Europe's got more expensive gas. I betcha most people over there don't drive 50 miles to work (& then 50 miles home) on a bumper-to-bumper freeway the way they do in Southern California. Plus, their currency goes a lot farther these days than the American dollar, which ain't worth the price of wiping with it.

Wow 11 dollars a gallon for beer.in a couple years gas will be $ 6 to $8 dollars a gallon if the bozos in washington will stop filling their gallon sized pockets with payoffs.they should pay more attention to control big oil like any other business.
As of now this country is going down the drain, I can't wait for the next administration take over next january. I feel sorry for the next president who has to clean up "W's" mess he left us in.Now I know how our freinds across the big pond feel.

well, i was a child then so I just remember him crying over the trash thrown from cars. Bu I do believe he cries over how our entire environment is being treated...therefore, the pollution from cars and land destruction that drilling certainly qualifies...anyway it raised my consciousness and I never have purchased a large gas guzzler...

I can't listen to that tune. It's awful.

Seriously, it hurts my ears.

And although the article makes some valid points, Starbucks & Budweiser are not essential needs. I hate to say it, but for most people gas is a NEED, not a want. You can't get by without it unless you live in a place with a fantastic public transportation system.
