It's the same with Venice, you can hear our harmonies throughout all these different eras. When we were playing at all of the clubs around town, we always had a big following. And then we would write some more, try and get a record deal and then we wouldn't get a record deal and we'd be frustrated. We were always encouraged by having support from fans. So although it may seem like we were in a black hole for the first 10 or 15 years of our band, we were still doing a lot of fun gigs, writing a lot and meeting people. Eventually, in '88 we met a guy who was the manager of Stevie Nicks, a guy named Glen Parrish. He actually saw me sitting in with somebody else, it's so weird of how the domino effect of what you do in your life [plays out]. I just happened to have nothing to do on a Tuesday night and a friend of mine was singing over in the marina. Do you remember a singer named Kenny James that was on Star Search?

Yeah, absolutely.

Great singer. He and I had become friends and he said "why don't you come down" and I was like "yeah sure." So I went down and sat in with him and did a couple of songs. Stevie [Nicks] and Glen Parrish happened to be there, it was just one of those stupid things. From that, he said "let me come see your band" and then he came and saw the band and he brought Stevie. And then everything just took off - he managed us and that's when we got our first deal. But even then, we never really hit the big time. We got our first deal, but it was a subsidiary label of Atlantic, it wasn't actually Atlantic.

[And it's at this point that my recorder ran out of juice (arrrgh!), something that I noticed a minute later, quickly switching to an alternate recorder. During the missing part of the conversation, Kipp segued from talking about their lack of initial success to the surprise success they would find several years later in Holland.]

TODD RUNDGREN Back to the Bars music review by Evolver
... solo material for much of the seventies) as well. There are other stars appearing on the album, also, but most of them, like Stevie Nicks and Hall & Oates, are just singing on the finale, Hello, It's Me.

It’s the year of Taylor Swift. Entertainment Weekly has dubbed her as “Entertainer of the Year,” much to some EW commenter’s dismay. (Out of curiosity I took a peek at what their readers had to say. Most range from canceling their subscriptions to pointing out the mag should have seen her duet with Stevie Nicks before handing out the honor. Over 201 comments and counting and very few praise the choice. )

EW: You caught some flak this year for some of your performances, particularly your duet with Stevie Nicks at the Grammys. Did that bother you?

Swift: Words are everything to me. Words can build me up and make me feel so good. And on the flip side, words can absolutely demolish me. I am nowhere close to being bulletproof when it comes to criticism. Feeling everything is part of being a songwriter. If I block out those feelings of pain and rejection, then I don’t know what I would write about. I’d rather feel pain when I read something terrible about me than feel nothing.

So, I'm guessing that would be a yes, it did bother her.

You know, I saw her on Letterman doing Speak Now and I thought that the song was so juvenile and stupid -- yet, I rewound to hear it again. I understand why this girl is popular.

[Gallery exhibit includes Stevie print]

Tennessean, The (Nashville, TN)November 27, 2010

Section: SUN LIFE

Gallery exhibit features links to musical artists
November 27, 2010

Estel Gallery's Art Defining Music features work by seven artists — Cole Closser, Wes Freed, Steve Keene, Brian Kershisnik, Jon Langford, Bob Masse and J. Michael Nelson. The gallery will host a reception for the artists from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

This group of visual artists has been associated with a number of musical artists, including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Pavement, the Dave Matthews Band, Tori Amos and Hillbilly Casino.

ARCHIVE

In a suite of portraits by Jon Langford, bright blue and red backgrounds contrast with black and white images of iconic musicians. A musician himself, Langford is a member of The Mekons and the Waco Brothers. His Jerry Lee Lewis captures the singer mid-wail, and a cigarette hangs languidly from Johnny Cash's mouth in Cash in London 1966.

Large etched wood portraits by Steve Keene, one of JD Souther and one of Linda Ronstadt, hang nearby.

Limited edition giclée prints of Bob Masse's poster designs include one of Stevie Nicks channeling a pre-Raphaelite muse in a burgundy dress with roses pooling around her. Masse was one of the definitive poster designers of the 1960s, and his work maintains a graphic link to the psychedelic designs of the West Coast music scene, particularly those associated with the Fillmore and other Bay Area venues.

Art Defining Music remains on view through Dec. 18 at Estel Gallery, 115 Rosa L. Parks Blvd. The gallery's hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday-Friday and noon-3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, call 251-8997 or go to www.estelgallery.com.

Stevie Nicks has certainly had an exciting career. This gifted songbird flew to early fame with Fleetwood Mac, a gig she still enjoys whenever the band gets together. On her own, she launched a solo career that rivals the popularity of The Mac in almost every sense. With awesome platinum albums like Bella Donna, Wild Heart, and Rock A Little, Stevie crafted her own place in pop history by making the kind of music that only she can make.

After The Glitter Fades is my favorite track from her Bella Donna album. With a decidedly country swing to it, the song is autobiographical in nature with lyrics that really capture the essence of the performer she was as a young woman. The video was a rousing look inside her recording session for this song. It’s a gem in itself.

Still as popular today as she ever was, Stevie tours on her own and with The Mac when it regroups every few years. She can still sell out concert halls around the globe and her adoring audience sings along with her on most every song. After The Glitter Fades is a great example of why she has such a devoted following. Stevie Nicks is one of a kind.
