The Beach Boys got the idea for the song from the relationship between Tab Hunter and his Hawaiian girlfriend (and her overbearing, bitter mother) in the 1964 "Ride the Wild Surf."

Tab has to prove to both of the women that he's not a surf bum—like their husband/father, who left them high and dry to go surf—and that he's dependable and will help them run their ramshackle farm.

Don't know if it's because the first version I heard was the Fleetwood Mac's, but I like more theirs than the Beach Boys version.

Well, considering the Beach Boys version was recorded in '63 & Fleetwood Mac's in '79, there's a whole lot of "technical advancements" that would make Fleetwood Mac's version very sonically superior to the primitively recorded Beach Boys' version. Now if the Beach Boys would've re-recorded it for their L.A. Light Album, there might have been a little bit closer of comparison between the versions.
