Cammie- you guys can search every demo Lindsey ever recorded of "Red Rover" and it won't be on it. These were very rough, beginnings of thoughts about the song that got into the hands of a poster on the Ledge waaaaay before "Say You Will" was even a thought. |

Been playing great old Lindsey Demos & Videos! FYI ... from a '90's demo casette... Interesting side-line...on the dat...Lindsey wrote Try For The Son...repeated it once again and wrote Try For The Son again!!! Wishfull thinking perhaps!!! We are so happy Linz has his son at last and a daughter... and another on the way!!! Makes Me Smile! Bye,Sky

Cammie, the song you all are referring to is "Try for the SUN," not "Try for the Son." As in "SUN," the celestial object at the center of our solar system. It is not a Lindsey original, it is adapted from a song written by Donovan Leitch in 1965. Lindsey's Adapted lyrics: "Try for the Sun." Written by D. Leitch; Adapted by L. Buckingham We huddled in the derelict building My gypsy girl and I We made our bed together With the rain dropping tears in our eyes And who would be the one To say it was no good what we done? I dare anyone to say, anyone to say we were too young We were only trying for the sun Mirror, mirror in the sky Won't you look what’s happening below No one knows what’s going on Won't you give us a sign where to go? And who would be the one To say it was no good what we done? I dare anyone to say, anyone to say we were too young We were only trying for the sun And who would be the one To say it was no good what we done? I dare anyone to say, anyone to say we were too young We were only trying for the sun We were only trying for the sun We were only trying for the sun Mirror, mirror in the sky Won't you look what’s happening below Nobody knows what’s going on Won't you you give us a sign where to go? The original lyrics by Donovan, written in 1965: We stood in the windy city The gypsy boy and I We slept on the breeze in the midnight With the rain dropping tears in our eyes And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun We huddled in the derelict building And when he thought I was asleep He lay his poor coat round my shoulders And shivered there beside me in a heap And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun We sang and cracked the sky with laughter Our breath turned to mist in the cold Our years put together count to thirty But our eyes told the dawn we were old And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun Mirror mirror hanging in the sky Won’t you look down what’s happening here below I stand here singing to the flowers So very few people really know And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun We stood in the windy city The gypsy boy and I We slept on the breeze in the midnight With the rain dropping tears in our eyes And who’s going to be the one To say it was no good what we done I dare a man to say I’m too young For I’m going to try for the sun Now, I'm really a novice at lyrical interpretation, but to me, his adaptation of the song has nothing to do with a desire to have children. It is a love song. [thanks to nancy for the lyrics.] Last edited by Merf; 01-15-2004 at 09:44 PM.. |

I really don't think Lindsey is so sexist that he'd be "only trying for the son" lol! Last edited by sodascouts; 01-15-2004 at 10:13 PM.. |

Correction to my thinking!!!
Hi Lindsey Girls! OH WOOOOW!!!
THANKS for posting those other great lyrics! It's Definitely SUN...Gotcha'!!! Someone else suggested that Son stuff to me fitting in with when LB wrote Family Man! My thinking HAS been changed about TRY FOR THE SUN! Sky P. S. Can I still be stubborn and think the beginning of his newer Peacekeeper DOES imply SON? Linz now Has His Own Son and is Worried about the World!!! LB sings ..."We Make All of OUR Sons...The Same!" A greater force made the celestial sun in the sky! FYI~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our 8 inchs of snow is turning into 9 inchs! Snowed IN!!! We'er going out to make a snow man! Thanks for Help!

Me and Carne at least always thought it was suns as in warheads or other explosives. I think there's a few ppl who agree with that one.
No dout it probably does refer to the celestial body itself because after all, the song is about the pantheon of alien gods looking down on Earth, talking about all the galaxies they've made and how Earth is a big disappointment. (Aw poor Lindsey we give him such a hard time :P )
