Jane is an angelic song and one of her best album closers ever.

She should have sent him out to work while she stayed home and practiced her piano. With a little serious work, she may have been able to be a genuine instrumentalist in the studio on those early Fleetwood Mac albums—the others might not have dismissed her or joked at her expense, and the experience for her may have been a lot more positive. (The others were very cruel: you can see it in the video footage.)

I've been teaching young adult and adult piano basics since I went off to college in 1983. I've never encountered anyone except Stevie who made literally no progress at the keyboard across a span of forty years (from the 1978 piano demos like Rhiannon and Mistaken Love to the 2015 Rolling Stone video of Gypsy on piano). If I didn't have these Stevie Nicks recordings, I'd say such a complete lack of growth was physically impossible. I know she had no practical reason to acquire any proficiency on the piano (after all, her band already had a fine keyboardist), but the fact that she never did, despite playing for fifty years and writing many of her songs that way, is absolutely unbelievable. No student I have ever encountered made zero progress across such an expanse of time. Even the way she holds her hands and fingers is emblematic of rank beginner. She must deliberately do this . . . but why? Part of her mystique?
I listened to the demo of Love Is for the first time in a while last night and wondered who is playing that? It certainly isn't her unless like you say she's sandbagging us.

Here it is. It was for UNICEF, Year of the Child.

It was discussed on here in this thread:http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=40156
She mentions "in the year of the child" in an early piano demo of Gypsy. I wonder if that was an early contender for Unicef or an afterthought.

I like the song too. It is about Jane Goodall and is quite beautiful.

Could it have something to do with the difference in complexity between playing by itself and playing while singing?

Either way, maybe she needed you as her tutor.

I imagine myself sternly admonishing her: "Stevie, you'll have to cut those nails!"

It's a pretty melody. I hum it in the shower, for some reason, or while cooking my famous Turkey Tenders with Lemon Capers. The problem with Jane is the words. Stevie is not part of the Less Is More School. She repeats "souls," "world," "angel," and "you have done so much" until you're ready to heave. The whole song is a platitude. You don't make Jane seem more angelic by saying over and over that she's an angel. There are times I despair of Stevie having little or no understatement in her lyrics—everything is overstated. Her best songs (Dreams) actually are great examples of understatement. Think of how many different layers of meaning one can pull from the subtle "Who am I to keep you down?" As a songwriter, Stevie would be better if she didn't feel the need to overdramatize every little point, and occasionally kept her visions to herself.

Its that intensity and drama that pulls me into the song. Its written and sung from the heart completely. "Well they might have put us both into prison, come way from the wall Jane"

I love the "There are angels here, on earth" Sent from God
In the eyes of the world, you have done so much!

Funny part is when I bought Street Angel in 1994, I saw a song called "Jane" and instantly thought it was about Jane Petty (the inspiration to part of Edge of 17). I could never make quite sense of it LMAO

Remember that benefit in 1991 or 1992 where Stevie sang Jane for the first time? It's one of those mysterious concert appearances that we never got a recording of, like the opening of the Starck Club in Dallas in 1984.

I am 12 years late to this band-wagon and I have not read all 50+ pages... these have probably already been posted by others (if so, sorry!)

-I am totally over her uniform of the platform boots, shawls, and chiffon. She admits herself that she does the same thing for every photo shoot and stage clothes. She also should change up her hair, which is stuck in the early 90s.

-Stevie's FM work is faaaar superior to her solo work (and the reason is all the extra help she's had on her FM songs to make them as good as they are)

-She deserves to be in the Hall of Fame for FM (which of course she is) but not as a solo artist. Her solo career just doesn't warrant it. SORRY NOT SORRY.

100% agree. Had her solo albums all been as good as Bella Donna I would feel differently, but the others are spotty at best.

I know I was hard on her not too long ago, but I've been thinking about it for a while now and I'm starting to maybe see why she just couldn't perform with him anymore. I'm wondering if the constant tension between the two is taking a toll on her mental health. Like, I'm not saying she's going crazy. But maybe just the thought of being in the same room with him brings her panic attacks? Maybe she just can't handle it anymore.
