Hmm, I thought it was actually Moore that turned the pickups around. The write up seems to imnply that Green changed the pickups.

It was Green who did that, John. From what I've read, the magnet was reversed in one pickup. Whether Green did that on purpose or it was a happy accident, I don't know. Here are a couple of links to more info:

This Vintage Lemon Drop is my main guitar . Although I sometimes switch to a Strat plus, I always return to the Vintage. These are interesting articles but here are a few thoughts:

1)Whether or not anything has been changed within the neck pick up, it has certainly been turned around IE adjustable pole piece screws are away from the end of the neck . Does this affect the sound ? In the factory position the screws fall under a particular harmonic node of the strings. (Ive always assumed this was absolutely deliberate) If you turn the pick up(no change in wiring or anything just turn it and put the surround back on ), the screws now lie under a different harmonic node(ie the harmonic produced here ,closer to the bridge, is markedly different from the first position ) if the bobbins** are idendical it would makes no difference , but if the screws give their bobbin a different electro magnetic quality from its companion ,it could make all the difference in the world !( Can't say I've ever seen this point discussed in relation to Peter's guitar before )

2) The first article is anoying cause, fascinating as it is when he opens the humbuckers up and talks about the magnet deflecting a compass needle, he unfortunately uses the word pick up when he should be talking about the bobbins to avoid ambiguity !

3) The description of the Lemmon drop says the wiring of the two pick ups has been made out of phase I think it says, by changing it at the toggle switch

4)Most of the time, when you see a clip of Peter playing ,he has the toggle switch in the down position, so he must be using only the neck pick up ,so the possible flipped magnet in the neck p/u/ wouldn't come in to it

5) So in Peter's guitar we have a possible magnet within the humbucker with the wrong orientation relative to all other factory models ,which is possibly further affected by the orientation of the pick up itself(see point 1) and yet in the Lemmon drop they produce the same sound by just wiring their guitar differently I've not played one of these but they may well have achieved it but it doesn't make sense!

6) My personal opinion is that it is so much to do with whose playing the instrument I mean Gary Morre didn't sound like Peter even playing the same "freak " guitar !

Topping my list of "Holy Grail guitars" is one of those Corsa "Manalishi"s with a HoneyBurst finish and the '59 style neck


But, then I have quite a few "Holy Grail" guitars on my wish list, as well:

The Lemon Drop looks fantastic for the money (even better in the UK - for once!). If you like Peter Green's music; and let's face it you wouldn't be here if you didn't you WILL easily recognise the hollow, nasal tone that OOP (out of phase) pick ups gives. This can be achieved either by flipping the magnet or reverse wiring.
On my Gibson Les Paul I have installed magnet flipped pickups but my Telecaster has reverse wired pickups that can be played in or out of phase and, if anything, the difference is more pronounced.
Check out "Bare Knuckle PG blues" and look at umpteen Les Paul related websites you will be deluged with info.
If you can, go and try the guitar, if it's half as good as is reported it should be a bargain, trust your ears. If you can't it will always be a gamble, can you set it up? I have bought guitars online and have been lucky but I can deal with it when they arrive needing a set up. Be aware, pickup height alone can have quite an impact on the sound of a Les Paul but nowhere near as much as the fingers playing it!
I have nowt to do with any businesses mentioned (apart from owning a Gibson and a few Fenders). I have seen one of these guitars in the flesh and it looked the business!
