A New Album for You All to Check Out...
The new album by Shawn Colvin is in US stores on 12 September called "These Four Walls" - I have had the pleasure of hearing the album already, and its a goodun
If you like folky tunes, emotional lyrics with an easy listening flavour - then this is definately for you. Shawn is actually one of Stevie's favourite artists as well!!! I recommend this album whole-heartidly |

Thanks for the recommendation Michael.
I really like Shawn Colvin, especially her album A Few Small Repairs.

Shawn's last album "Whole New You" has one of Stevie's favourite songs "Another Plane Went Down", which you can read about in Stevie's 9-11 journal on the NicksFix |

I'll definitely pick it up then if it compares to A Few Small Repairs!
I have a few of her albums but that's by far my favourite. I didn't realise Stevie was a fan. That's pretty cool.

The new album is probably more similar to her last album than "A Few Small Repairs", but you should love it anyway

I am so excited. I just read this was coming out and I am gonna run right out and get it. She is a great songwriter. Did John Leventhal produce again ?

Please do. It is a highly enjoyable album. Very easy listening, but also has some edge. Have you heard much of Shawn before Carrie? |

WOW!
I had no idea that she was coming out with something new so soon! A WHOLE NEW YOU is a CD close to my heart. Every song had something to say to me...I treasure that. ACL this weekend, some college buddies partying for a few days and a new Shawn Colvin CD...how happy can you be?? rbs

Shawn sang at my boss' daughter's wedding a couple months ago! I would have been there, but I had Steely Dan tickets. I love her voice and I also think she's a fabulous songwriter.

I've been a fan for quite a few years now. I first saw her on a show with Mary-Chapin Carpenter. One of my favorite bootlegs I have is from a 1988 show with Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin and Cheryl Wheeler. It was at the Birchmere in Virginia and the show was so intimate it felt like 3 ladies with guitars sitting in my living room playing just for me.

I got the record yesterday and have listened to it about 4 times. It is still sinking in, but I have to say that it is probably not as good as Whole New You or A Few Small Repairs (tough to be as that one is a masterpiece).
There are some great songs, most notable the title track, "Tuff Kid," "The Bird," and "So Good To See You". Since Leventhal is producing, there are the typical subtle textures, seamless atmosphere, and the occasional odd instrument. What's missing is the edge she had in the last two records. Her greatest strength lies in creating an irony between her lyrics and the actual sound of the songs. These songs are a bit low on the anger, resentment, and danger present in her best efforts. The contrast between the foreboding and the pretty has always served her very well. The whole thing could do with 2 or 3 more uptempo numbers. Overall, it's a pretty low key, mid tempo to slow affair. It's all stunningly well crafted and written. Evidently, she is not in as dark a place right now, and I say good for her. The songs, however, could have benefitted from a little more drama. Real or imagined. For anyone who plays music, or has a great interest in her, I found a fascinating two hour radio show on the making of the record and her career in general. Here's the link : http://www.prx.org/pieces/13636 You have to register, but it's easy and well worth it.
