[Christine McVie just did not like? Well, how dare she? How DARE she?]

The biggest soap opera in rock history will be listed again

Fleetwood Mac to make her big comeback tour on Sunday at the Hallenstadion in Zurich stop by Stefan Künzli

That would hardly anyone thought possible. Four out of five members of Fleetwood Mac (Christine Mc Vie just did not like) have once again a viable working relationship for a tour and even working on new songs. Reason for the comeback is the 35-year anniversary of "Rumours", the album that defined the sound of the time.

1977 reached the terrorism links with the kidnapping and murder of employers President Hans Martin Schleyer by the RAF its peak. In the United States Jimmy Carter was elected president, John Travolta danced through "Saturday Night Fever" and "Star Wars" premiered. The revenue of the music industry grew explosively and as if by magic pop was the dominant and all-illuminating music. Pop was the land of plenty with glamor, glamor and luxury.

In this atmosphere of elation "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac, with over 40 million records one of the most successful albums in pop music history was born. The band was founded in England in 1967 as Blue Ribbon (then with Peter Green) regrouped and moved to Los Angeles in 1974. To couple John (bass) and Christine McVie (key) and the eponymous founding member and drummer Mick Fleetwood joined the American pair Lindsey Buckingham (guitar) and Stevie Nicks (vocals). The two new coined as a result the band and they headed in a new direction.

Euphoria, drugs and decadence

"It was a different time. At that time, everything seemed possible, "says Buckingham in" Rolling Stone "," we lived in a bubble, there was no life. Coated budgets are irrelevant, drugs and alcohol were, of course. " In this euphoric time of "take-it-easy" the carefree Californian folk-rock of Fleetwood Mac and Eagles was the soundtrack of the hour.

But where there is shine, it also has its drawbacks. The Hippie Solutions of Love, Peace and Happiness resulted not only in well- emotionally, but also in carelessness, self-sufficiency, self-esteem and decadence. The excesses were felt even in Fleetwood Mac. As "Rumours" was, Christine had just separated from John and drove it to the boy the last tour. Stevie Nicks also parted with a roar of Lindsey Buckingham and had a secret affair with Mick Fleetwood. Previously, separated himself from his wife that when he found out that she cheated on him with his best friend.

This is a private art

Accordingly, slow and tense did the recordings. There were no debates. Instead, the band members comforted her with cocaine. The songs were the valve. Here they themed the affairs, stories and personal tragedies or wrote songs about the band members. Buckingham's "Go Your Own Way" was a foreboding of the coming separation of Nick and "Dreams", the common attempt to zusammenzuraufen in "Second Hand News" for the separation assurance and "Never was
Going Back Again "written by the guitarist as he consoled himself with a new lover. "You Make Lovin 'Fun" was the song by Christine McVie about the affair with the boy and "Do not Stop" the upbeat song after the completed divorce. "Songbird" she devoted the whole band and "Oh Daddy" Mick Fleetwood, who managed to hold the band in spite of the incidents. "Gold Dust Woman" was finally a nod to the vast amounts of cocaine that were consumed during the recording.

"The biggest soap opera in rock history," a US-critic called the album. Fleetwood Mac made the private to public art. But it was more than that no other album reflects that glorious time between glamor and decadence better than "Rumours". "It was the worst time," Stevie Nicks says now, looking back, "but we wrote the best songs of our lives." This ambivalence makes for even today the great appeal of Fleetwood Mac. For behind the harmless and smoothly polished facade of the soft rock and feel-good songs abysses were opened. The hippie dream was over. But Fleetwood Mac wanted to hold on to it, while the bitter reality of the grim life had long since gained the upper hand. Result, "Rumours", the bittersweet masterpiece of rock history.

After the recordings, the love relationships were destroyed and no one wanted to see the other again. More than 35 years later Fleetwood Mac operate on the public stage with the past.

[Christine McVie just did not like? Well, how dare she? How DARE she?]

Really!! But at least she wrote "Do Not Stop" for them.

[..."You Make Lovin 'Fun" was the song by Christine McVie about the affair with the boy and "Do not Stop" the upbeat song after the completed divorce. "Songbird" she devoted the whole band and "Oh Daddy" Mick Fleetwood, who managed to hold the band in spite of the incidents. ...]

Thanks for posting the article. It loses a little in the translation, but it's good that they are getting all sorts of press in Europe.

The wounds of the past seem healed: Fleetwood Mac at the Hallenstadion

The British-American band Fleetwood was in Zurich a live comeback with several lengths. The indoor stadium was completely gestuhlt with 7500 spectators and was almost sold out.

With "Second Hand News" was the legendary album "Rumours" opened in 1977, was now made the song also the start of the comeback concert in the Hallenstadion.

It started the nostalgic trip back to the pop and rock world of the 1970s and the memory of the greatest soap opera in pop history.

Because the song was guitarist Lindsay Buckingham addressed to his Elapsed time, singer Stevie Nicks, you had just been separated from him with a roar. "I will not miss you when you're gone," he sang for 36 years on and danced with her a few songs engumschlugen later stage.

But the songs from "Rumours", one of the most successful albums in pop history, were only the very thin thread of comeback concert.

Hits such as "Dreams" Nicks or "Go Your Own Way" by Buckingham were frenetically celebrated by the audience, but the songs of Christine McVie, the third major songwriter of the cult band missed. So the most important songs like "Oh Daddy," "Songbird" and "You Make Loving Fun." After her "Do not Stop" was played as an encore.

Christine McVie did not want to make a comeback. Quite in contrast to the two English founding members Mick Fleetwood (drums), her ex-husband John McVie (bass), as well as the two Americans Buckingham and Nicks, which are obviously having fun preparing to be back on stage together.

Especially Buckingham was highly motivated and shone with solo deposits.

Mick Fleetwood said in an interview with the "North West Switzerland» that «some songs only really sound good today."

He has not promised too much. But not because the band would have been better, but because it was over extended earlier.

Off the headlights had a keyboardist, guitarist, another support Buckinham, two backing singers made for the full vocal harmonies and even hidden behind amplifiers grooving another drummer. Thus, the sounds in the Hallenstadion worked amazingly dense, compact and fresh.

During the nearly two and a half hour show, although many of the hits were played, but the concert had on several lengths - especially for the lesser-known songs of the album "Tusk".

This follow-up album "Rumours" in 1979 was a commercial flop, has developed with its easy experimental bond over the years become a cult album for insiders.

"Let's celebrate Tusk," Buckingham said. But the audience wanted to hear at the Hallenstadion in the first place the songs from "Rumours".

So only came towards the end of the concert atmosphere, and real and "Go Your Own Way", the last piece before the encore, the audience raised from their seats.

After all, Fleetwood Mac not only played the nostalgia card. With "Sad Angels" and "Without You," she also presented two pieces of their new, digitally released 4-song extra plate (EP) "Extended Play".

While "Without You", a previously unreleased number of Buckingham and Nicks, was recorded in 1974, "Sad Angels" is really new.

A rousing uptempo party number that leaves you wanting more. "We are working on new song material," Buckingham said.

Maybe it create Fleetwood Mac still, record a new album with new songs. The wounds of the past seem in any case healed in four.

Entertaining songs, lengthy implementation

http://www.nzz.ch/aktuell/zuerich/zu...ung-1.18167405

Zurich Culture Today, 17:28

The legendary band Fleetwood Mac was at the Hallenstadion about two and a half hours a comeback concert. Despite numerous hits from the late 1970s, she succeeded only partially, to attract the audience from the reserve.

The concert began full and sec The drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie pointed the piece "Second Hand News" with rolling game soon to be launched and peppy about the song "The Chain", which sounded muffled. Lindsey Buckingham played his guitar and rough croaking like an old bluesman, the poignant chorus howled like once with CCR. And Stevie Nicks fascinated in their mysterious piece, "Dreams" by musing, grouching and self conscious singing.

Full voltage stimulus

There was of course no coincidence that Fleetwood Mac with the same three songs from "Rumours" began. The album is released in 1977 with 40 million copies sold of the most successful albums in music history. And it is clear that the timeless character of hits it contains is not only driven by the excellent craft of three profiled songwriters also come from different musical traditions of England and the United States. The exciting appeal of these songs is due in large part to one another on the intricate relationships of the musicians that they processed in their pieces. "And if you do not love me now, you will never love me again", yes Lindsey Buckingham sang in the play "The Chain". And later took in the concert Stevie Nicks touching the hand that had left him then.

Lindsey Buckingham emphasized the qualities of the soon published in 1979 follow-up album "Tusk", which was demanding but also less successful. Before the band played four songs from it, he explained, musicians should not rest on a hit formula. Actually showed especially the title track also live with a drunken forward storming horn section that these songs were musically sophisticated and daring than those of "Rumours", especially when you consider that the punk had just conquered the charts. The group has failed on this album, however, try new knitting patterns. The previously played song "Sad Angel" only underlined this, especially since it was the only new song that night.

Especially with more atmospheric songs such as "Sisters of the Moon", the group succeeded less and less to maintain the musical tension, although by a keyboardist, a guitarist and a - was supported Drummer - hidden gambling. In particular, Stevie Nicks lost their initial enthusiasm and sung with "Sara" almost phlegmatic. Also missed the one in the original releases so charming voice of Christine McVie, which should have had no desire to make a comeback, which is why some of the data from their hits were missing in the program. Instead of two background singers would have been better engaged a second lead singer.

Much applause for Classics

Stevie Nicks had before, "Without You" warning indicates that the notes would be to take much longer than the piece itself. And indeed, she tried unsuccessfully for several minutes to explain why in 1975 the decisive reorientation of Fleetwood Mac came when she and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band formed in 1969 based on this song. The latter took over the leadership of the increasingly show of Stevie Nicks and let feel how important are some songs for him again and again. This was particularly impressive when presented solo piece, "Big Love" is the case, that very well describe the person he once was. Meanwhile, he was only an echo of it, the change is just very important.

Musically, it was felt but little. Two thirds of the songs played came alone from the three albums released between 1975 and 1979. However, this is likely the expectations of 7500 spectators have fully complied with in gestuhlten Hallenstadion, who were mostly over 50 years old. Most applause were for and against closing the classic "Go Your Own Way" and "Do not Stop". The latter convinced not only thanks to the ravishing choral singing, but mainly because the band interpreted it with enthusiasm rather than nostalgic lethargy. Finally, it is said in the piece, too: "Yesterday's gone, ooh, do not you look back."

[I realize the translation muddles things, but this review reads like a eulogy. Also when the 1975 line up does start dying, can people not write "yesterday's gone" in all the obits, please?]

They play together, as though each alone

By Jean-Martin Büttner . Last updated at 15:05 17 comments

A few nice moments between apathy or boredom: Fleetwood Mac played today at the Hallenstadion below the level of their songs.

It captures twice as good with "Second Hand News" and "The Chain", the two pieces, which led the first and second page of "Rumours" in 1977, when CDs were still plates and Fleetwood Mac had come together in a tight Californian studio in order to feed on cocaine and alcohol to destroy their marriages and relationships, to learn to hate each other to the bone and to record an album that numbed her pain with a hochmelodiösen, excellently arranged radio music that to this day more than 45 million has sold once. "Rumours" was in hell and sounds like heaven.

The music in the Hallenstadion a kick like a drug: with the force of the English rhythm section that gave the band the name, drummer and band leader Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on bass virtuoso unobtrusive. With guitar, with vocals, the American euphoria of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. They drive the spirits high with their vocal harmonies, sometimes they complement each other in many harmonies, soon they splay or comment on each other in call and response. "Even if you do not love me," sings the former couple, "you will never be able to tear the chain that binds us." This is not Wittgenstein, admittedly, but in English it works, the music does yours.

False memories

Fleetwood Mac to make music for the Pacific sunset, they decorate a surface that hides the bad by mirroring. Their best songs from the seventies continued work on the soundtrack of false memories, so they operate nostalgia. That the band is still or again go on tour, has something funny, but it also applies to other. No one had foreseen, at the time that the Stones would still stand as a septuagenarian on stage, come to the Eagles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, Neil Young, the fourth Beatle Paul McCartney and other survivors of the sixties again and again would leave on their incessant touring. And their audiences would go again and again to see them, at prices that can only afford the time was young and now deserves.

The lack of voice

But must be consistently bad? It decides everything but in concert, kindled on the joy of playing on the stage, one notices immediately the musicians and recorded the hall. As well as the concert on Sunday in Hall Stadium, which is not sold out begins, 7500 came. And because it starts so well, it rumbles a little Christine McVie, the third singer and songwriter of the band, which took place after several comebacks and deteriorating disks in 1997, they've had enough sung, at least with this band. In London in mid-September, she performed with her former colleagues for a bit and got to hear an ovation. Fleetwood Mac without Christine, it's like Abba Frida without it missing someone important, even if the rest of the band has taken two singers and two accompanying musicians on the left and right of the stage unlit parked.

That one voice is missing in the mixed choir, helps that the concert disappointed after a good start and despite a good conclusion, but it has other reasons, and they weigh heavier. The longer the band on this long night toils, the more obvious is their effort in playing and the greater the boredom while listening. The more complicated Nicks and Buckingham express their joy to play again here in Zurich, the hackneyed come before a their protestations.

"Thank you for your patience"

One believes them know that they get along again. But you can not hear their music. The musicians are there when play every man for himself. The bassist looks like he would rather be somewhere else, the drummer for the terrible attacks against end list form of self expression, he plays a drum solo. Singer Stevie Nicks is lost in over prompts and long scarves. For each forcefully put forward piece like "Landslide" or "Go Your Own Way" we have a boring like "Without You" bear in the her nasal timbre unpleasantly reminded of how important the contrasting dark voice of Christine McVie was the sound of band. "Thank you for your patience," says Nick once, when the applause very economical fails, at least she realizes it yet.

It remains Lindsay Buckingham subject, always the impeller of the band, the concert tear out a little from his lethargy. The guitarist may not be a great soloist, but on the acoustic he plays with power and sings with undiminished intensity. That his own pre-rendered "Big Love" is one of the best moments of the nearly three-hour concert, confirmed the impression of a band whose members have nothing more to say to each other. "Sad Angel", the only new piece of the evening, provides the evidence: irrelevant, uninspired, uninteresting.

The End of Yesterday

As the band to know their opposition, they formulated it into two pieces, which are also taken from the "Rumours" album. "Go Your Own Way" at the end of the regular concert part and "Do not Stop" as the second of four encores, the piece with which Bill Clinton launched his first presidential campaign. That's it exactly: the four blades on the one hand as if any of them prefer to go his way, but they still can not stop because their presence has no future, at least not artistic. "Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone" they chanted on the stage, and the whole room sings. The sentence was intended as a relief, then, today it sounds like a loss
