Its cool to see all these responses and everyone seems to be going with the Mirage version. Except for ChiliD. cant understand why you picked the Time era other than just to be different. It's nowhere near as emotional nor does it ring true to the core of the song. Not only that, but the only original members playing it there are Mick and John. Damned wrong? I thought it was damn funny. All in good fun.

yeah I think that's just "a little bit " like trying to sway the poll. I love that Mirage video performance of the song, but I love some of those Rumours tour Chains. And then there's the SYW tour version I love alot more then The Dance. And of course the album version does have some things the live versions do not. But after all that I'll settle for The Mirage version.

It's gotta be the 'Mirage' concert video version for me, too.
You watch that performance, and you can't help but think that if there weren't a few thousand witnesses in the audience, Stevie and Lindsey might not have waited until 1987 to go at each other's throats!

The Mirage video version is great to watch, but just listening to it, one notices how strained Lindsey's voice gets and it detracts from the pleasure of the song. Therefore, I'm going with the Dance.

Well...ChiliD says a lot of things that are uncalled for when people feel the need to express their opinions. Sorry to step on your precious feelings. Its JUST a poll. And no, the TIME era band wasnt underrated. Christine, Mick, and John were the only thing cool about that record. The rest of it was unbelievably lackluster.
And the band could've done something great "given the chance?!" They WERE given the chance. They recorded an album and had a tour!!! It was crap-EEE.

About the Time lineup, yes they are underrated, and their version of "The Chain" was pretty much superb.
About the original question... I'll stay with the original version, from the album. I don't think any live version has surpassed its greatness. Song of the moment - Twisted
