Default Dallas Taylor passing….?

Dallas Taylor, former drummer with Crosby Stills and Nash, later drug counselor, and inspiration for Stevie's song "For What It's Worth" (they had an affair on the road) has reportedly passed away today. He was 66, same age as Stevie.

Someone mentioned it on Richard Dashut's blog and asked if he knew him (he did not.).

Anonymous: Stevie's exlover Dallas Taylor of Crosby Stills and Nash died today. Did you know anything about their affair?

I did not know about their affair and am sorry to hear of his passing.

Subsequently I Googled and found this:

Dallas Taylor, former Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young drummer, dead at 66

Karen Butler

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18 (UPI) --LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Famed drummer Dallas Taylor died Sunday morning, his wife Patti announced on Facebook.
No cause of death was disclosed.

Taylor was best known as a member of the iconic folk band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but he also performed with Van Morrison, the Paul Butterfield touring band and Clear Light.

A former drug addict, Taylor underwent a liver transplant around 1990. His website said he has worked the last nearly 30 years as an addiction specialist and interventionist.

"This morning at 2:30 am I lost the love of my life Dallas W Taylor, he came into my life almost 18 yrs ago and saved me as much as i may have saved him," Patti posted on Facebook.

"To me he was just a Good Man, a Good Friend, a Good Father, a Good Grandfather or Pop Pop, a Great Drummer and much beloved by many," she continued. "I cannot even find the words to put down to say how grateful I am for the many friends and family who have been there for both of us these many days he has spent in the hospital, especially last night. I know he is a peace. He will be missed beyond words, it is so very hard to imagine my life without him by my side, but i feel his love even as i write these words."

Street Angel tour. He was a drug interventionist; helped her through rehab. Stevie thanked both Dallas (first name only) and his wife (at the time, Betty Wyman - they'd been married since 1989) on that album's linernotes in the 'thanks' section.

An article about him in 1990, which addresses his early work in that area, wife, and so on: http://articles.latimes.com/1990-01-...ver-transplant

And an interview with him in 1994 or thereabouts: http://www.classicbands.com/DallasTaylorInterview.html He says near the end that "I'm in a great relationship." Not sure if he was already separated or divorced and dating again by that point. Otherwise, it was still Betty he meant. My internet's being terrible or I'd search out when exactly he got married again, etc.

I did like seeing Denny Seiwell (session drummer who played with McCartney for awhile) post about it on Facebook. Sweet words:

"This morning at 2:38 am we lost another icon both of the drumming community and the sober community. Dallas Taylor helped countless people find their way out of the madness of alcohol and drugs and inspired many many drummers by his unique style. If you knew Dallas you were blessed. His battle is over and he left In a room full of people that loved him. Dallas touched many lives and will be missed very much. RIP Dallas."

RIP.

Do we have confirmation from Stevie that he was the inspiration for that song?

Not exactly, no. It's also very impossible that there are other situations and people involved in the content of the song, frankly. People have joined the dots because of:

ABOUT DETOX, circle 2007: Nicks admitted herself to the Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Venice Beach. It took her 47 days to detox. “Dallas Taylor, the drummer for Crosby, Stills and Nash, was there the whole time. I nearly died. I moulted. My hair turned grey. My skin started to completely peel off. I was in terrible pain.” She shivers at the memory.

-

ABOUT FWIW, 2011: "It was the only time I ever went on a bus, with my friend the drummer, right after rehab and I was really fragile…".

-

The In Your Dreams film segment goes thus:

The first part of her talking she’s sitting down, talking to someone as they record - its starts with footage of a bus but goes into the video of her sitting there, and is the same voice for all of it.

[footage of a bus] "It was the only time I went on a bus." [cut] [shot of Stevie talking] "right after rehab and I was really fragile and scared, and I should not have been on a big tour… which I was." [cut]

Her voice then ‘changes’, and it’s a VO, evidently not from the conversation she’d been having.

[footage of bus, Stevie’s VO] “When you come out of rehab, they tell you ‘don’t do anything. [footage from FWIW video] You need to be careful. Don’t get married, don’t sell your house, don’t do anything stupid. Because you may not feel that way in a year.’”

Her voice is then back to the original conversation.

"So, um, we basically made out across the United States. [footage of Stevie recording/talking, again] It was fantastic. And that’s what this song is about.” [footage of FWIW video, still ‘conversing Stevie voice’] "And he did save my life because I was not ready for thousands and thousands and thousands of people sober." [footage of bus]

Then comes a discussion of writing the song - new, not from journal in Hawaii in May, 2010. Inspired by watching programme on ‘riding the rails’.

[In studio, and FWIW video footage] "And I was giggling. I started to, whenever I get to the ‘you said, even if I…’ - cos this man said that to me. At one point he goes ‘If I packed up all my stuff and came to your house and said ‘here I am’, that’s not what you want. It’s not what you’d want.’ It happened on the road, it was what it was. It was beautiful. But it wouldn’t have lasted off the road. And he knew that. He was wise enough to say that to me. So that’s where that came from."

Stevie then does VO again. VO turns out to be Stevie in a chair talking to camera.

"And just the whole love that surrounded that situation. I was so appreciative of it. Because there’s nothing more scary than walking on that stage in front of 10,000 people and thinking that you might not be good enough to do it anymore, or all your insecurities are right there in your hand. And he took that away. And he saved my life. [IN: Came from the heart] Totally did. [recording situation, chatting again] I call them my heart songs and his is one of those heart songs.”

Thanks for the info! I'm surprised the article asserts it's about him so confidently, though, if it's never been explicitly confirmed.

ETA: Wait, I think it was just the OP that said that - sorry - I was thinking it was part of the obit text.
