Women that Men Choose to Listen To, The Independent

http://www.independent.ie/regionals/...-29642225.html

Shea Tomkins – 08 October 2013

WHILE the songbird that is Sinead O'Connor and Wrecking Ball performer Miley Cyrus were volleying verbal insensitivities at each other via the insult-on-tap facility that is Twitter last week, I happened upon a little gem of a programme that was airing on TG4.

It was a documentary charting the life of Dusty Springfield (Mary O'Brien) and neatly wrapped up in the confines of an hour her rise to stardom, struggles with sexuality, submission to a reported drug and alcohol addiction, her re-emergence to popular acclaim in the late 1980s, and finally her death, through cancer, in 1999.

Watching Dusty performing on the small screen got me thinking about female vocalists and prompted a conversation with my male peers (I'm sure the ladies would have very different ideas) which led to me carrying out a poll to see which lady vocalists 'the lads' felt deserved a place in the upper echelons of popular music history. The responses were many and varied. I whittled it down to a top ten, with the results as follows. And there's not a Whigfield to be seen!

10) Rita Coolidge: An American singer/songwriter that transcended boundaries to score hits on the pop, country, adult contemporary and jazz charts, it was this husky-voiced singer's loved-up performance with Kris Kristofferson (they were married for seven years) on the Old Grey Whistle Test, in 1972, when they sang Help Me Make it Through the Night that lives long in the memory. A You Tube treat.

9) Stevie Nicks: As a member of Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist, Nicks has sold over 140 million albums worldwide and for many men is the undisputed 'Queen of Rock and Roll'. Her tempestuous relationship with songwriting partner Lindsey Buckingham added to the sizzling magic of many Fleetwood Mac releases.

8) Laura Marling. A product of the London folk scene, Marling won Best Female Solo Artist at the 2011 Brits Awards and has a career in its infancy.

7) Lisa Hannigan: This Dubliner began her musical journey as a member of Damien Rice's band before embarking on a solo career in 2007. Hugely popular on the contemporary Irish music scene.

6) Karen Carpenter: The first name to be mentioned twice in our poll, her 'beautifully clear voice' has a soothing effect on the ears even if the sound of Carpenters' records often comes in for criticism as being 'sickly sweet'.

5) Mary Black. Back in the day when cars had tape players, I knew a man that loved long-distance travelling just so he could listen to Mary's delightful tones over and over again. She has a special place in many Irishmen's hearts.

4) Aretha Franklin: Ranked number one in Rolling Stone's Greatest Singers of All Time poll, you just have to start listing her hits to understand why is she is recognised as the 'Queen of Soul'.

3) Kate Bush: Her mother was a Daly from Dungarvan, County Waterford, and Kate's talents hailed from another stratosphere. Her unique styles mean she will forever have a devoted following.

2) Dusty Springfield: The woman whose ashes are spread over the Cliffs of Moher. A truly wonderful voice and 'rumour has it' Adele has been approached to play her in an upcoming biopic.

1) Sinead O'Connor: Few will deny that Sinead O'Connor not only ranks among the best female vocalists that this country has ever produced, the lads are in agreement that she is possibly the best.

The video to Nothing Compares 2U has been in the news recently, and is one of the most wonderful five minutes of pop music in history – one of those rare things that you remember seeing for the first time.

Sinead, then, deserves her place at the top of the 'women men like to listen to' chart. Further thoughts would be welcomed at shea.tomkins@peoplenews.ie

Default American Horror Story’s Lily Rabe on the Stevie Nicks Shout-out and Her Own Obsession

By Denise Martin

After being burned alive in last week’s premiere of American Horror Story, Misty Day returned tonight as the hippie witch with the power to bring back the dead. She also excels at keeping her neighboring alligators fed. But what she really loves is Stevie Nicks. (I think we all died a little when young Zoe asked if Stevie was the winner of American Idol, yes ?) With Franken Kyle left in the care of mystical Misty, one can only wonder: Will he dig “Rhiannon” as much as Misty? Vulture spoke with the wonderful, if especially spoiler-averse, Lily Rabe about all things Stevie and Misty’s mysterious life in the New Orleans swamp.

What did Ryan Murphy tell you about Misty before you started shooting?

I knew Misty would be burned at the stake in the first episode and that I’d immediately be back. But the big thing he told me was that she is obsessed with Stevie Nicks. That’s been a major part of figuring her out, post burning. The wardrobe, the hair, it’s all very Stevie-centric.

How does one approach playing someone with a Stevie Nicks obsession?

Well, I’m pretty obsessed with her, too. It’s been delicious. It’s not that Misty just wants to look like Stevie or listen to her music. She’s quite isolated and lonely, and she has this love affair with Stevie. Stevie is her idol and the lyrics are her mantras that she lives by. She’s looking for someone to help her understand why she is the way she is, so in that way her soul is nourished by Stevie. It’s not a superficial obsession, it’s a deep love. And yes, you will see some shawls.

Stevie and Ryan Murphy previously collaborated on Glee. Do you know if she got a heads-up about your character? In the past, she hasn’t exactly embraced the rumors that she was into witchcraft.

Oh, she and Ryan are absolutely in touch. Actually, when I found out about that I had to pretend I didn’t know about it because I’d get too excited. I wouldn’t be able to function. Someone said something like, “Well, we might change this one thing. We’re e-mailing Stevie now about it.” Uh, excuse me? You’re doing what? I don’t really freak out about many people, but even talking about her right now my cheeks are turning red. She’s a really big deal to me. To everyone. But yeah, Ryan and Stevie are e-mailing, and so she’s very aware of what we’re doing. Yes, there are plenty of things you can read about people having these theories about the witch thing, but I don’t know anything about that. Certainly it was something she was interested in and wrote about in her songs.

Have you gotten to speak with her?

No, no, no. I might just combust.

Do you think we’ll see Misty take flight, à la Rhiannon? It would be a witchy cliché, but awesome.

I can’t say. It would be awesome. Flying is what I want if I could pick a personal superpower.

Why do you think you’re obsessed with Stevie?

My older brother is a musician, and he’s ten years older than me and really cool. When I was little, he would play a lot of Fleetwood Mac and R.E.M. and Aimee Mann and Liz Phair. He taught me very, very well. I became especially obsessed because I started learning the guitar on set of American Horror Story last year, and the first song I asked to learn was “Landslide.” Why am I obsessed? There’s something about Stevie that is kind of supernatural. Please know I’m not saying there’s anything witchy about her, but she is sort of beyond comprehension. She is other-worldly. And for Misty, for a girl in this world who has this thing that is extraordinary, Stevie Nicks is great, because she has that. She really has magical powers in my mind.

So you’re into the idea of witches?

I love all that stuff. When I found out when we were shooting here in New Orleans, where it’s really at your fingertips, it was very exciting. I’m very open to all of those things.

In tonight’s episode, Misty manifests in Zoe’s car. Did they summon her when they brought back Kyle?

It’s connected to that. I think they summon her without even knowing. What they’re doing belongs to Misty in a way, so there’s a necessity for Misty to be there. Franken Kyle is left with Misty and from what it looks like, he can no longer speak. Not that I could pick a favorite, but everything I’ve done with Evan Peters is my favorite. On a show like this, you’re never gonna get scenes with everyone, but last season, I would be like, “Hey Ryan, I really love that Evan. I really want to work with him.” He’s a really special actor. I’ve never read or seen anything like the relationship between Misty and Kyle. There are so many things in it. Evan is so brave.

How would you characterize their relationship? Does she feel maternal toward him?

I wouldn’t say no and I wouldn’t say yes. There’s a lot of colors in that relationship and I would hate to name them because I think it would take something away. The relationship is very fluid and keeps growing. All of a sudden this new thing will come into it. It’s definitely complex.

Misty has the power of resurgence, but she also had some sort of control over the alligator that emerged from the swamp and ate that guy. Could she be the next Supreme?

She is very, very powerful, more powerful than she understands in the beginning. She has a huge relationship with nature. But she’s not wondering about the Supreme because she’s out in the swamp, so ... look, I know she’s listening to a lot of Stevie.

What does she do all day alone in the swamp?

Oh, she’s a busy girl. She has quite an elaborate garden. I do think she’s a very creative person based on the way this house that she’s built for herself looks and is maintained. And she has to go shopping somehow to wherever the hell she finds those amazing clothes. The boots are a necessity no matter what she’s doing, because you gotta be in boots if you love Stevie.

[A slide show of stylists answering the same questions]

http://www.whowhatwear.com/hollywood...hatWear.com%29

Jen Atkin

Please describe yourself in three words.
Lucky, busy, and obsessive.

What was your first job?
When I first moved to LA in 2000, I worked as a receptionist at Estilo Salon.

When did you know you'd made it?
When I got to feed Stevie Nicks' meter. What was your most stressful moment? Feeding Stevie Nicks meter…no, I don't really get stressed. I love having challenges with timing and deadlines. I think not making flights has to be the most stressed I've ever been.

Who is your ultimate style icon?
Pat Cleveland.

What's your favorite look you've ever created?
It's so hard to pick just one. It’s like choosing a favorite child. I had a lot of fun at the Met Ball this year with Jess Alba and Minka Kelly, creating cool braids with metal details in the hair. SO it’s a TIE.

What's inspiring you now?
Can't stop listening to Capital Cities' "Kangaroo Court"—it sounds so '80s and fun. I don't like movies. I have been watching The Day Before, a Sundance documentary series about designers the day of their shows. Love watching hard-working, successful people pulling it all together.

What's your desert island essential?
Funny you should ask: I'm on an island now doing a castaway-themed shoot in Malaysia. Would have to be Oribe oil for the hair. Every girl needs hydrated castaway hair.

lol, it just means to put change into the meter but these days they don't really have meters anymore at least they don't in most of the bigger cities. they have those pay stations instead where you have to enter your license plate number to pay.

In Los Angeles and the greater Southern California area, I still encounter a lot of meters, but many of them -- at least the ones I prefer -- take credit cards and I don't have to scramble to find coins as much as before.

Excerpt from a piece on Westboro protesters:

http://www.queerty.com/westboro-chic...pard-20131023/

Tonight, WBC is scheduled to protest an Eagles concert in St. Louis, Missouri. Their website claims that front man Don Henley is a “serial fornicator” who banged Stevie Nicks in the 1980s. And that begs a serious question — if sleeping with Nicks inspired Lindsay Buckingham to write some of the most iconic music of the 1970s, then why did Henley produce almost exclusively garbage in the 80s?

[excerpt from an interview with Carly Black]

The celebrity she’d most like to meet: “Stevie Nicks. I’ve looked up to her for so long, and I admire her stage presence and voice. I also think she’s a good person. I’d love to know more about her. I cover ‘Landslide,’ ‘Gold Dust Woman,’ and a lot of Fleetwood Mac stuff.”

[Excerpt from article from woman discussing what she learned when she became 40]

http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/life...028-2wc8y.html

Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac does a much better show when she's clean and sober. I say this after seeing her perform many years ago to a packed and somewhat shocked arena while remaining mostly horizontal on what appeared to be a bed of incense, handkerchiefs and tambourines.

[Excerpt from interview with Michael Grimm. He noticed his addiction problem during a Stevie Nicks tour]

By KATE MAGANDY

http://www.sunherald.com/2013/11/14/...t-propels.html

The Lortab did its job, but it took its toll. Grimm became addicted to the narcotic. He said he knew there was a problem during his tour with Stevie Nicks in 2011.

He got in touch with a doctor while on tour, who prescribed Suboxone to treat the prescription painkiller addiction.

"It was the only way to get me through the tour and when the tour was over I went to detox and tried kicking it."

Grimm said when he returned to Las Vegas after the tour with Nicks, he went to a local doctor, who again prescribed Suboxone.

"It had a big grip on me, physically, mentally and emotionally," he said. "But God is on my side. I'm pulling through this. I put myself in this mess."

'I didn't feel right'

After two years on the Suboxone, Grimm told his doctor he wanted to quit it. Grimm said his doctor said he wanted the singer to keep taking it three more years.

But Grimm had had enough. He got in touch with a friend in Hancock County in the medical field who told him not to quit the Suboxone cold turkey. She helped him wean off the drug, which he has been off of for six weeks, he said.

But the damage had been done.

[Excerpt from a Kate Moss Playboy interview summary]

http://sheboyganhub.sheboyganpress.c...rticle/3801631

Jones asks questions, such as "Who would be on your ultimate guest list?"

"Well, I would like to have dinner with naughty people who have a story to tell - like you!" says Moss, squealing and pointing at Jones.

Then she continues, "Jack Nicholson, [photographer] David Bailey, Stevie Nicks, Catherine Deneuve, Joan Collins - love! She texted me the other day. I could not believe it. 'Hi, it's Joan Collins.' I was like.â?¦ [mimes dying-of-shock], My husband, because it would be mean if I didn't invite him. And Hugh Hefner, obviously."
