Child Of Mine--9.5
The Ghost--7 (down the list of my favorite Bob Welch tunes)
Homeward Bound--8.5
Sunny Side Of Heaven--(on a scale of 1 to 10) 20!!!! (The best thing Danny ever did...with FM or after)
Bare Trees---7.5 ("Station Man" rehashed a third time..."Sands Of Time" on Future Games was second)
Sentimental Lady---8.5 (better live as first half of medley with "Future Games"...even better on "French Kiss")
Danny's Chant---8 (the intro makes an expectation the rest of the song doesn't deliver; but it's worth putting up with the rest of the song just for it.)
Spare Me A Little Of Your Love---10
Dust---8
Thoughts On A Grey Day--talk about "wasted space"

Add 'em up, divide by 9 equals an average score of 9.6

I just wonder what this album would've sounded like had the original mixes not been erased at JFK airport in 1972.

Child Of Mine-7
The Ghost-6
Homeward Bound-9
Sunny Side of Heaven-8
Bare Trees-8
Sentimental Lady-10
Danny's Chant-5
Spare Me A Little Of Your Love-10
Dust-10
I'm not even going to rate that poem at the end. I wish they had put a song on the end instead.
Total-8.1

I really like Bare Trees. It's my second favorite Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac album, after Mystery To Me. I think Spare Me A Little was Christine's first great song that she wrote-I love it and Dust is my favorite Danny Kirwin song. Sentimental Lady & Hypnotized are my favorite Bob Welch songs. I'd just like to get rid of that poem at the end.

Not rating it, but my alt BT is

Child of Mine
Ghost
Homeward Bound
Sunny Side of Heaven
-
(Danny’s Chant into) Bare Trees
Sentimental Lady
Spare Me A Little of Your Love
Trinity
Dust

It would have been a gatefold, with Thoughts On A Grey Day written out on one side and pic of the band on the other.

Child of Mine 8/10
Great music. As per usual with Danny some rather nonsensical lyrics- but actually not his worst.

The Ghost 7/10
Good. Atmospheric. Precursor to several other BW FM songs.

Homeward Bound 8/10.
One of a solid brace of Christine McVie songs on this record. Features some of Christines best piano playing on a Fleetwood Mac record. Really rocks out.

Sunny Side of Heaven 10/10
Brilliant. Its speaks without a need for words.

Bare Trees 8/10
I'd have opened the record with this.

Sentimental Lady 9/10
Slightly under-cooked. Nevertheless the bare bones of a classic song. Deserved to be this incarnations big hit.

Danny's Chant 5/10
Awesome intro. Shame it didn't go anywhere.

Spare Me a Little of Your Love 9/10
A lost gem. Could have been a big hit- if not by Fleetwood Mac then perhaps by a Motown-style singer.

Dust 7/10
Lovely, tender music. Danny's best lyrics Perhaps this wasn't the best song to close the album- should have featured earlier.

Thoughts on a Grey Day no score
Why, oh why did they include this when there were several great songs they could have put on here instead.

71/90
7.9/10

CHILD OF MINE 6/10: I mourn what became of Danny as much as anyone but on this album as well as Kiln House he seemed lyrically uninspired. Nothing ever had much more than one verse and a bridge.

THE GHOST 10/10: The first of Bob Welch's paranormal musings given wonderful atmosphere by Chris on mellotron just as Crystal and Oh Daddy would later on. Get that mellotron out again Chris it's been gathering dust for too long.

HOMEWARD BOUND 7/10: 25 years before Temporary One, Chris makes no secret of her dislike of international touring. You totally get the feeling of the sophisticated country girl she later became sitting in her rocking chair with another drink.

SUNNY SIDE OF HEAVEN 7/10: A nice little instrumental. Although it's not as good as Earl Gray a couple years earlier it speaks volumes that after a few years rest it was played on tour by Lindsey Buckingham on the Rumours tours.

BARE TREES 6/10: See Child of Mine for my opinion.

SENTIMENTAL LADY 10/10: Although the pastoral feel of this album and Future Games seemed to depart with Danny Kirwan it is most prominent here on Bob's songs. This original version of what later became a solo hit for him with 3/5 of the Rumours line-up playing on it goes perfectly with the mellow wintry feel of it all even with the gentle wind blowing.

DANNY'S CHANT 7/10: Raw feedback-drenched guitar rock, a nice contrast to the rest of the album.

SPARE ME A LITTLE OF YOUR LOVE 7/10: The first of Chris's mellow love songs to make a Mac album. You can even forgive the Aretha Franklin rip-off backing vocals (just a little).

DUST 10/10: Early 20th Century poetry really brought something out in Danny (cf Dragonfly). If things hadn't gone the way they had for him then it would have been great for him to do a whole album of that kind of thing. I can just imagine the BBC2 documentaries he'd have done if only...

A moment of silence for Danny Kirwan 1950-2018

THOUGHTS ON A GREY DAY 9/10: Yes you read that correctly. I love that poem - Mrs Scarrot sounds like a lady with some substance whom I wouldn't have minded sitting having tea and cake with as the sun set over Headley Down.

OVERALL: Although I've rated a lot of these at 7/10 the album is truly greater than the sum of its parts. It's got a much more pleasant feel than the coke-sodden Beverly Hills vibe you get circa Tusk/80s. An English country afternoon in winter captured in one album. The influence of this album on me was such that a few years back I made a little pilgrimage down to see Benifolds and the Crown pub where the band hung out. I even went in winter to get a feel similar to that captured in John's awesome cover shots. I look forward to the day I can afford to go again. Meanwhile this album and Future Games back to back represent a beautiful and slightly longer chapter than a lot of Mac's all too quickly snuffed out candles of brilliance outside of their better-known periods with Bob and Chris hitting their stride and developing the styles that would become such a hallmark of their future work with the group.

I wish Mick would just say definitively that the group does not exist anymore. Then we can edit Wikipedia and get rid of all this crap about the surviving members of the 2018-19 lineup comprising a current configuration.

Thanks to Mick and all erstwhile members for the good times.

I'm boosting this because this has been on rotation the last couple of days. Solid album, will list my rankings in another day or two since they tend to change after a few more listens. Really digging the pre-BN albums these days!

I'm not going to rate the songs on the album, just going to comment how happy it makes me to see "Homeward Bound" getting such love. I have often wished that later FM featured Chris' piano playing as prominently as on this song. Quality of production is often in the ear of the listener, but I thoroughly enjoy the less layered production of this era of the band. The five albums with Bob Welch are, in all honesty, my favorite era of Fleetwood Mac.

I'll bite

Child of Mine - 10
The Ghost - 9
Homeward Bound - 9
Sunny Side of Heaven - 9
Bare trees - 10
Sentimental Lady - 8
Danny's Chant - 9.5
Spare Me A Little - 8
Dust - 8.5

Great, solid effort. Only second to Mystery to Me and Future Games to me personally when stacking up the "wilderness years" as I refer to them as (the 1970-74 records). Only wish is that Thoughts on a Grey Day didn't close the proceedings as it cheapens the whole deal and the great Dust in particular, a very nice Danny tune.
