30 Years Ago Today
Mick called Stevie and Lindsey to ask them if they wanted to join FM....
The rest is history.... The thing i wanna know is: what was their response? Did Stevie answer? Lindsey? Did they say, "hold on...." and then try to decide what they wanted to do? "can we call you back?" I know they weren't ecstatic about joining so i can't imagine they said yes right away. |

First of all, it's Lindsey Mick wanted. Lindsey said he wasn't interested unless they'd take Stevie too-package deal, Lindsey said. Then Mick asked them to dinner to see if the girls would get along. They did so Stevie and Lindsey joined.
I've also heard that Lindsey kind of left it up to Stevie whether to join or not. She says she got all the previous albums and listened to them and decided she and Lindsey "could do something for the band." Another source says Keith Olsen was approached by Mick and Keith said he doubted Lindsey would join without Stevie. Whatever, can you imagine their surprise?

The New Year's Eve tale is a great story but I thought it was a little more involved than a NYE phone call. The way they tell it now isn't what I heard years ago. I heard Keith and Mick talked first and then Mick talked to Lindsey at the recording studio. I don't remember if Stevie was there. I think she was. I don't know if that was the first time the package deal was discussed but Mick was told at some point that he would need to take Stevie to get Lindsey in the band. At the recording studio he felt them out on what they were doing and then after talking to Keith again about having to hire both, and also running it by John and Chris, Mick called them at home and asked them both to join. This happened across more than one day at the end of '74. Lindsey didn't really want to join and Stevie did ($$$). They still had the Birmingham, Alabama gig to do as BN but they decided to join. Everyone got together and made it "official" at a New Years Eve party thirty years ago on 12/31/74. It sounds cooler to say Mick called on NYE. He probably did, but that was not their first contact.

In his first Penguin Q&A, Bob Welch mentioned that sometime in the fall of '74, Mick apporached the others about bringing Christine and Lindsey into the fold thereby making it a six piece.

I apologize for the faux pas. I meant Stevie. It was very late when I typed that post.
