Warner Music UK Launches New Label As Part Of East West Restructure

Warner Music Entertainment will be U.K. home of mainstream stars like Bette Midler and British TV personality Alexander Armstrong.

Warner Music U.K. is beefing up its A&R team as part of a major reorganization of front line label East West Records that will effectively see the imprint split in two.

Led by East West president Dan Chalmers, the restructure sees the launch of a new specialist imprint for mainstream artists and TV stars called Warner Music Entertainment that sits within the East West stable.

Focusing exclusively on established acts with adult fan bases, its roster includes Bette Midler, Cliff Richard, veteran pop group Boyzone, and British TV personalities Alexander Armstrong and Sheridan Smith -- all of whom were previously signed to East West in the U.K.

That leaves East West to focus on developing new talent with Paul Samuels appointed to oversee A&R -- in addition to his continuing responsibilities as vice president of A&R at sister label Atlantic Records U.K. His first signing to East West is hotly-tipped Irish singer-songwriter Áine Cahill, who has toured with JP Cooper and Kodaline.

Other artists already signed to the label – and will remain part of its roster -- include Robert Plant, Lindsey Buckingham, pop duo Dusky Grey and Mumbai-born Nikhil D’Souza.

"Paul’s appointment and the launch of Warner Music Entertainment are a sign of our intent for East West," said Chalmers -- who also heads Rhino and ADA UK - in a statement.

"We're determined to grow the label’s reputation as a home for artists with the power to move pop culture and the talent to become household names, whatever the genre," he went on to say, promising increased investment in A&R to nurture "a new generation of stars."

Meanwhile, Warner Music Entertainment will deliver "an industry-leading service to mainstream stars," said Chalmers, who has been at the helm of East West since it was revived by Warner Music Group CEO of recorded music/Warner U.K. CEO Max Lousada in 2014.

"East West has always been known for extraordinary artists like Áine Cahill and I can’t wait to introduce even more quality new voices to the mix," said Samuels, who started his career working for Atlantic Records Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman as label manager of Big Beat Records.

In his new post as VP A&R Atlantic & East West Records U.K., Samuels will work alongside East West general manager Angie Somerside in building the label’s roster and market share.

"East West is synonymous with nurturing acts -- and we have developed an exceptional, passionate team at the label who are all working towards helping to break some great new pop stars," said Somerside, calling the restructure "an exciting new era for East West Records and Warner Music Entertainment."

'We're going to recapture the spirit of the legendary label': A&R exec Paul Samuels joins East West

East West Records UK has expanded its A&R operation with the recruitment of award-winning exec Paul Samuels, who has spent two decades at Atlantic.

As exclusively revealed in the latest issue of Music Week, Samuels will oversee A&R at East West and work alongside GM Angie Somerside. Adding to his duties at Atlantic Records with artists including Birdy, James Blunt and Kwabs, Samuels’ new title is VP, A&R, Atlantic & East West Records UK. Samuels, who reports to label president Dan Chalmers, was promoted to VP, A&R, Atlantic Records UK in 2014.

East West has also launched a new specialist imprint for mainstream entertainers called Warner Music Entertainment. The roster includes Bette Midler, Alexander Armstrong, Boyzone and Sheridan Smith, who scored a UK debut breakthrough last year.

East West Records UK will be home to established artists such as Robert Plant and Lindsey Buckingham, as well as new talent like Dusky Grey and Nikhil D’Souza. Samuels’ first signing to East West is Irish singer Áine Cahill. At Warner Music Entertainment, Samuels will receive additional A&R support from Ric Salmon.

Dan Chalmers, president, East West Records, Rhino and ADA, said: “Paul’s appointment and the launch of Warner Music Entertainment are a sign of our intent for East West. We’re determined to grow the label’s reputation as a home for artists with the power to move pop culture and the talent to become household names, whatever the genre. Paul is widely respected for his ability to discover and nurture exciting acts that have had huge hits and long careers, and pairing him with Angie, who is one of the most inventive marketers in the business, makes for a dynamic combination. As we invest more in A&R, we’ll be nurturing a new generation of stars at East West, while providing an industry-leading service to mainstream stars at Warner Music Entertainment.”

Paul Samuels said: “I’m really excited for the chance to work with Angie and Dan on the East West revival. They’ve already begun to create an impressive roster, together we’re going to develop it further and recapture the spirit of the legendry label. East West has always been known for extraordinary artists like Áine Cahill and I can’t wait to introduce even more quality new voices to the mix.”

Angie Somerside joined East West last year having previously held roles as GM at Columbia Records and MD at Mute.

“We’ve already had some impressive success and I can’t wait to take it to the next level with Dan and Paul,” she said. “East West is synonymous with nurturing acts – and we have developed an exceptional, passionate team at the label who are all working towards helping to break some great new pop stars. This is an exciting new era for East West Records and Warner Music Entertainment.”

Samuels launched his career working for current Atlantic Records Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman, on his first independent label Big Beat Records. When the label was acquired by Atlantic in the ‘90s, Samuels started working with the company’s wider roster. He went on to break Estelle with her hit American Boy, as well as signing artist including Craig David, Spiller and Flux Pavilion for North America. His global signings have included Sinead O’Connor, Estelle, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Rumer, Enter Shikari, Delilah, Honne, Kwabs, and Dan Owen.

I find it interesting that there's no mention of Buckingham/McVie or Christine as a solo act, since this is the label the B/M album came out on overseas. Maybe they're just concentrating on acts with upcoming releases!
Then again, if that was the case, this would be the perfect time to mention an upcoming release from Buckingham, especially if it was due out in the next two months.

yes i'm not sure what to think.

but shades of what was happening with original GOS are going through my mind... wasn't there big turnabout in Warners at the time too, and whoever was behind Lindsey releasing original GOS was out (which led to label wanting LB to get that music out under FM moniker)? i hope his album is not caught up somewhere in the middle of all of this, again. even if this is the overseas part of WME.

does make you wonder what if they had gone elsewhere for SYW like Interscope or wherever.
