In this Christine-goes-solo 1973 fantasy, I think it's safe to say both Dave and Steve are right. The album would probably not have been a big hit, nor possibly even matched the sales of Pre-BN Mac albums. But it would, most likely, have sold a respectable amount, enough to keep her on a label.
At this point in her career, she was compared (in print, for ex: see the Rolling Stone record review of "Bare Trees" in the archive) to Sandy Denny and Dusty Springfield. The latter had difficulty matching the commerical success of "Dusty In Memphis," despite recording a string of excellent albums in the early seventies. Chris would have had a fan base, and certainly some critical praise. But given her retiring stage presence, her dislike of rigorous touring, and her preference for understatement, she would probably have carved a minor--albeit noteworthy--niche in popular music history. |
