Thank you for sharing that story with us. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year as well. "Silent Night" is one of my all time favorites.

No problemo. Wanted it on my iPod anyway so I figured I may as well share after converting the YouTube file for myself.

strange how the absence of the video makes it so much better, lol.

I find most things are much better when a key sense is deprived, the visuals being the case here. No video could ever be as good as what the mind is forced to create for itself. Thus why I will always prefer the book over the movie version, anyday.

good point on the book and movies. sn may be the exception to that rule, in many cases though. generally though, i'd jump right on that bandwagon.

Drew, what a beautiful story to share this holiday season. I've never heard the term "born into eternal life" before and it's such a great way to describe someone's passing, because they are never truly gone, they just move on to the next great adventure. Thank you for sharing.
Ironically, I was just in my car thinking about this song and was going to post a new thread about it, and here one is. I was going to remark how I go to church with my family every year on Christmas eve and at some point everyone sings Silent Night together. And being that I love to sing I always enjoy this part of mass. But I do have to admit, the little devilish imp that I am, I always want to, at some point in the song, belt out... "WELL IT WAS A..." |

Excerpt from Dennis Peck from The Oregonian, an article on Christmas traditions [Maybe John taught her how to sing it from his days as a tax man]:
http://www.oregonlive.com/hg/index.s...wn_wreath.html When writing about Christmas traditions -- and when you've been around as long as I have, there are a lot to remember -- it's hard to decide where to start. Do I start with the Christmas tree that almost crushed me? Or the "Macarena" -singing gorilla in a Santa suit? Or maybe Stevie Nicks' version of "Silent Night"? Or the time my sister and I were almost arrested? * * * For years, we'd gather with family on Christmas Eve and, in the misery-loves-company vein, what started as a "you won't believe how bad this song is" kind of thing became a friendly, then fierce, competition to see who could come up with the worst holiday song every year, which, of course, we were all then subjected to. And, Fleetwood Mac aside, there's nothing quite as horrifying (although Johnny Cash's "The Little Drummer Boy" was close) to Stevie Nicks singing "Silent Night" with all the emotion of an IRS auditor. Not that King Diamond's 1986, uh, heavy metal classic "No Presents for Christmas" is exactly easy on the ears (bit.ly/uty9we, if you want to listen). |
