Here is my submission for Barb's latest challenge over at Haunted Design House.
The theme was "Witchy Woman", and immediately Stevie Nicks popped into my head. I've been a fan since the early eighties and have always heard rumors of the beloved Stevie being a witch and that she made a deal with the devil for her fame as her voice has been a bit suspect by some. No matter to me, Stevie has always had a bit of a witchy mystique that I have admired and even wanted to emulate in my younger years. This little page might be a nice addition to my "Scrapbook of Me", that I plan to make some day. Return To Form (Drag City) What happens when Stevie Nicks joins Black Sabbath? Alas, nothing good. Major Stars has gone and shat some 40-odd minutes of someone's high school basement rehearsal tape all over a perfectly good CD, not only without apology but with the expectation that you will actually buy this from them. They have succeeded only in creating an abomination in the eyes of Apollo, or at best a soundtrack to teenage mullet-grooming in a trailer bathroom that doubles as a meth lab. Their songs are composed of thinly-disguised classic rock riffs peppered with arbitrary, self-indulgent time changes and descents into ill-conceived sonic pastiches of guitar feedback. The vocals ride that low vibrato that's so Nicks, but also showcase awkward, amateurish phrasing and cadence, and seem modeled after those of the worst male metal singers (Creed, anyone?). In 2001, Stevie Nicks released Trouble In Shangri-La. I definitely do not think that anyone expected a decent album from her at that point. I know it took me by surprise. It may not have had a monster smash hit single like "Stand Back" or "Edge Of Seventeen," but I will say that it is her best solo album ever. Part of it is that the album was partly produced by Sheryl Crow, who I think was more motivated to make a great Stevie album, than (maybe) making her own album. Not that Sheryl didn't care about her own music, but she really wanted to do Stevie justice, and on the song "Sorcerer," she does. I think that helped the rest of the album, produced by John Shanks, to be really great. She was also coming off of the huge success of the Fleetwood Mac song "Silver Springs," which the band rejected from Rumours, and which became a humongous hit on their reunion album The Dance. I don't have a total theory for this one, Stevie just had "it" back.

Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks, Insider
This baby right here is the song that made me suggest the challenge of killer duets. The way Stevie and Tom’s voices go together makes my heart hurt. They both sound so broken-hearted in this song. After I mentioned this song in the shuffle thread, McLovin said that Tom wrote it for Stevie to record, but when she got it she knew it was an amazing song and thought it was only fair to give it back to Tom, and they ended up making a duet out of it. Marilyn Martin (born on May 4, 1954 in Tennessee, raised in Louisville, Kentucky) was a female pop singer from the mid 80's. Marilyn started her career by singing backup for artists such as Joe Walsh, Don Henley, Kenny Loggins, and Stevie Nicks. When Doug Martin (former head of Atlantic Records) heard Marilyn sing backup on Stevie Nicks' 1985 album, "Rock A Little," he was impressed quite enough to ask for a demo from Marilyn. After that, Marilyn was signed to Atlantic Records for a 2-album contract. During 1985, Marilyn was connected with Phil Collins for the song, "Separate Lives" which was featured on the "White Nights" movie soundtrack. The song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her highest and most notable hit song to date. In 1986, Marilyn released her self-titled debut album which peaked at #72 on the Billboard 200 chart. Her first solo single, "Night Moves" peaked at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also managed to peak at #18 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock charts. The follow-up singles, "Body and the Beat" and "Move Closer" were released, but failed to make any impact on the Billboard charts at all. In 1988, Marilyn released her sophomore album, "This is Serious" which didn't chart at all on the Billboard 200 chart. The first single from the album, "Possessive Love" (which was written and produced by Madonna) failed to make an impact on the charts. The follow-up single, "Love Takes No Prisoners" didn't fair well either. After that, Marilyn was released from her contract with Atlantic Records. Marilyn continued her music career by singing backup vocals for other artists throughout the 90's. As celebrity visits go, Renee Zellweger still wins in my book. She visited the hospital last year and stayed from 1100 until nearly midnight (much to the chagrin of her hospital escorts), visiting and posing for photos with just about every patient who wanted to meet her – not just the injured soldiers. She called the kids of one soldier so they’d believe him when he said she was here. She spent about 30 minutes in each solder’s room. She was also generous with her time in posing with staff for pics. I have only seen Stevie Nicks once as I was going off shift, but she’s another one who is usually there still making the rounds at midnight. But Ms Palin wins out over a lot of them who, as a co-worker explained to Ms Zellweger, show up and basically say, “I’m famous. Your injured. Take my picture!” and, having done their good deed, leave. President Obama was at the hospital recently, but sadly I was not working that day.

How did Stevie Nicks become famous? I don't hate her, but I don't like her voice. She sounds like a goat to me. What was it that made her famous? 10 hours ago- 4 days left to answer. And even worse, the point came too late for me to win. The four artists who join Elvis Costello this week for SPECTACLE’s second annual “guitar pull” are all extraordinary singers and exceptional songwriters. But with all due respect to Neko Case, Ron Sexsmith, and Jesse Winchester, only one of them has been able to strike the balance that Elvis describes as the ability to have “huge commercial successes, but put heart and soul and smarts in them as well.” This master of creative juggling is Sheryl Crow.
It has now been more than fifteen years since the former music teacher from Kennett, Missouri made the leap from background singer (most notably, as part of Michael Jackson’s touring band) to A-List frontperson with 1993’s Tuesday Night Music Club. That album, which was recently reissued in an expanded two-CD edition, sold over seven million copies and won Crow the first three of her long list of Grammy Awards—though, as she tells Elvis, the album’s breakthrough hit, “All I Wanna Do,” almost didn’t make the final cut. In a way, her seemingly sudden success has caused some listeners to overlook the caliber and consistency of Crow’s music. “When I came out with ‘All I Wanna Do,’ a lot of people felt I was just some pop diva,” she told me last year. “Most people still think that.” Other artists, though, certainly appreciate her work; she has shared stages and studios with Kid Rock, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, and many more. “She has a wonderful ability to make words work, to phrase, to really build a song,” her friend and frequent collaborator Stevie Nicks once said. Perhaps Crow’s greatest strength also sometimes presents an obstacle—her role as one of very few artists capable of bridging numerous musical worlds, from old-school rock snarl to contemporary hooks, from country to folk to radio-ready pop. Over the course of her six albums, sometimes this has even created a bit of confusion about her own musical identity (back in 2002, she told me that “I had gotten so far away from who I am that I didn’t know who I was writing for”), but it adds up to a career that long ago should have silenced all of her early skeptics. “There are the older, real classic rock stars, and then the rest of us fall somewhere between that and the readymade pop stars,” she has said. “We’re really in some no-man’s land.
