Black Magic Woman is one of an all time favourites hit which Sledge featured on the night. Written by Peter Green is first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1968, subsequently appearing on the 1969 Fleetwood Mac compilation albums English Rose (US) and The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK). In 1970, it became a classic hit by Santana, as sung by Gregg Rolie, reaching No. 4 in the U.S. and Canadian charts, after appearing on their Abraxas album, becoming more closely associated with Santana than Fleetwood Mac. In 2005 the song was covered by ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Snowy White on his album The Way It Is. In 1996, the song was also covered by Gary Hoey on his album Bug Alley.

Although not as popular as Santana's arrangement two years later, Black Magic Woman nevertheless became a fairly popular blues-rock hit peaking at No. 37 in the UK Singles Chart. It was featured in Fleetwood Mac live set-lists even after Green had left the band, when it was often sung by Danny Kirwan, and during concerts in the early 1970s it would form the basis for long mid-concert jams. The song would often be preceded by a band member reminding the audience that it was a Fleetwood Mac song before it became such a big hit for Santana.

With the recent news that the original lineup of Santana recorded new music, we revisit this 2009 Singled Out where Gregg Rolie (founding member, lead singer and keyboards for Santana and Journey) told us about their version of "Black Magic Women." Here is the story:

"Black Magic Woman" is still one my favorite songs to sing and perform even after almost 40 years. It took me about a year to convince the band that we should do this song. It was one I had a passion for and I knew I could sing it. Some songs are made for you and other songs you just sing. This one was made for me.

A little known fact is that Mike Shrieve (drummer for Santana) turned me on to "Black Magic Woman". He knew I was a big Peter Green fan from his involvement with John Mayall's Blues Breakers where Peter took Eric Clapton's place as the lead guitarist and played on the album "Hard Road".

Mike gave me the Fleetwood Mac album with lead guitarist Peter Green and I found "Black Magic Woman" penned by Peter. It became a #4 Hit for Santana and one of the most recognizable Santana songs for decades to follow. I'm sure glad Mike gave it to me.

I believe Greg's account, but I am a bit surprised he had to convince Carlos to play it, since Carlos was, by all accounts, a big Green fan.
