WHO IS TOM RATH? -

According to "Newsweek" magazine, he is the man the Bush administration is using to strong arm Senate Republicans to vote for Harriet Miers. (“[W]hen George W. Bush's political team wanted to send ambitious Republican senators a firm message about Harriet Miers (crude summary: ‘Lay off her if you ever want our help’), they chose Rath to deliver it.”)

According to the list of accomplishments Tom Rath cites on his own "webpage", he “actively assisted in the U.S. Senate process that confirmed David Souter as Supreme Court Justice.”
It can only be a matter of time before John Sununu calls Miers a “home run!”

So when are the "real" Republicans in the US finally going to get fed up enough with this truly heinous and despicable administration to defect? Are they all too cynical? Do they fear that if they break formation and go out on their own they'll just hand the Democrats a victory in 2008, which would be even worse in their eyes than another evil, incompetent Bush-school Republican? 1912 all over again?

Because from where I'm sitting, the time sure seems ripe for someone to stand up and offer a real political alternative to Americans. This big-money special-interest two-party system ain't working. If somebody like John McCain had the balls to defect and run for president on his own ticket and bring a whole bunch of Republicans and moderate Democrats with him, I think you'd see one gigantic slice of American breathing a huge sigh of relief and then starting up a massive cheer. You've got millions of Republicans out there who are increasingly disillusioned with their party that lies to them and wastes their money and bungles virtually every aspect of American policy, and you've got at least as many Democrats who sick and tired of their party refusing to come up with any solutions to the current mess other than shouting, "Bush sucks." Let's shake things up, kids. It's time to stop selling out within the safety of the establishment.

Well yes, it was really more of a rhetorical question, but this is really the biggest problem facing the American political system right now. People are so beholden to a two-party system in which both parties are completely bought and paid for and neither is willing to offer real alternatives to problems, and people are content to vote for the slightly lesser of two evils as long as there's a D or an R next to the name.
