Default Question about album process....

How long before an album is released does the first single get put out on radio??? I'm wondering HOW MUCH longer we are going to have to wait to hear ANYTHING from them!

Kristin

p.s. If any of you have a sec. and I know some of you have already heard this, but would you go to the chit chat forum and answer some of my questions on my thread about fan clubs?? Pretty please

I'm not sure what the answer is to your question in the general case (I don't think there IS an exact answer?) , but in this particular case I really don't think we'll be hearing the first single until March at the absolute earliest.

That's very hard to say. From what I have seen, the bigger the artist (at the time) and the bigger the expectations of sales from that artist, the earlier the single is released before the album. TISL was not expected to do as well as it initially did, so Every Day and Planets weren't released until like, two days AFTER the album came out. Meanwhile, I'm sure the record companies are planning big sales for Justin Timberlake (blah) and Eminem, so their singles get released very early. It seems like a more promotional thing. They focus their attention early on to the expected high sellers, and then just release singles randomly on others'. The same goes for how well singles do -- for instance, Eminem's singles always hit #1 on Billboard, so they are released pretty close together and scheduled to go out once one begins to fade even a little bit. Meanwhile, John Mayer's first single, No Such Thing, was out for I don't know how many months before Your Body Is a Wonderland was released simply because No Such Thing didn't catch on until many, many weeks after it was released. So, I think it depends on what the record company expects the new FM to sell.

In the case of "Rumours" (which was released in Feb 1977), the first single "GYOW/Silver Springs" was released in Oct 1976.

USUALLY, the first single precedes the album release date by a month or so.

In the case of the Beatles, a couple of times, they released an album and a single the same day...neither song of the single was on the album so you had to buy both!

Ummm, I dunno...I'd say earlier than that...I think that after the first of the year, we'll be hearing some "new" stuff. (Once the Christmas rush for VBoFM runs it's course) Now, whether it gets RELEASED until March may be another thing. Another decent marketing move would be to get airplay a few weeks before the single is even available.

This is how I think it will end up...

The first single will leak around late March. The video will hit in April and the album will drop in early May.

Lets cross our fingers we still get it in the spring!
