Making Rumours out of Tusk
What's also curious - and please try this at home- is that it's quite possible to condense this material into an excellent single album that almost feels like Rumours II. Fine, but would it have the peculiar allure of the record they delivered, which grows on you as it unfolds and if you take the trouble to return to it, eventually exerts a powerful hold? ~ from the liner notes of the the latest Tusk reissue.
Apologies if this has already been done, but I'm sure we're equal to the challenge. I've tried to give each Rumours track a musical or spiritual sibling of sorts from Tusk and I think this order works well, having listened to it. Any suggestions, criticism or improvements would be welcome. I know I'm not wrong (Second Hand News) Sara (Dreams) Save me a place (Never going back again) Think about me (Don't Stop) What makes you think you're the one (Go your own way) Never make me cry (Songbird) Tusk (the Chain) Brown Eyes (You make loving fun) The Ledge (I don't want to know) Over and Over (Oh Daddy) Sisters of the Moon (Gold Dust Woman) I think there's a goodly portion of the peculiar allure of Tusk here whilst offering a Rumours feel. Opting for a Lindsey song in place of IDWTK doesn't seem a bad idea to me. If anything he's more prominent than Stevie in the latter. All bar one of Christine's songs on Tusk are pretty slow so a doppelganger for YMLF isn't really on, but Brown Eyes mirrors and enhances its sexiness. If Silver Springs had made it onto Rumours, I would have used Beautiful Child as its Tusk replacement and stuck it between Never make me cry and Tusk between the two sides of the original LP.

Very good, I would have just put Angel in place of The Ledge as the I don't want to know of Rumours vol. 2.

I'll have to try the Angel suggestion for IDWTK. Instinctively, something doesn't gel for me on that one but I'll see..

I Know I'm Not Wrong for the place of I Don't Want to Know. Honey Hi for the place of You Make Loving Fun. Brown Eyes for Oh Daddy. And I think Storms would be a better closer, the way it just trails off at the end similar to GDW, whereas Sisters of the Moon comes to a halt. Everything else, I'd agree with this list. Fun idea! |

EDIT- this revised track listing really works. Mirage is no longer the attempted Rumours II. It was always hiding in plain sight on Tusk and we never noticed.

for me it works because IDWTK is sung as a duet instead of by stevie herself so then you dont have two stevie singing songs at the end not to mention that IKINW just gets the vibe the best, has a similar somewhat playful feel also sara is like 3 hours long so it might as well count for two songs and storms is also long, stevie had no chill with her song length on tusk, lindsey are all much shorter and most of christine's too

I've added Beautiful Child as my Silver Springs replacement as I suggested in my original post and I think this adds a little more balance. Stevie is too absent for long periods, otherwise (don't get me started!). This is then a Tusk mirror of the 2004 Rumours reissue. Stevie gets three songs at 17:14, Lindsey five at 14:44 and Christine four at 12:10, totalling 44:08, which would have fitted nicely onto one side of a C90 tape in the late 70s, early 80s (kids, ask your history teachers).
EDIT- I guess there would still have been problems fitting this order onto a vinyl LP in 1979, just as in 1977 though. Tusk would have been great to start Side 2, which would have meant an impossible seven tracks on Side 1. TEFM to NMMC would be 19:28 which also means an unworkable (I think) 24:40 for BC to Storms. Still, it's an interesting parlour game. So the Mr Scarrott/Dreamsunwind Rumours II cut of Tusk would be: That's enough for me (Second Hand News) Sara (Dreams) Save me a place (Never going back again) Think about me (Don't Stop) What makes you think you're the one (Go your own way) Never make me cry (Songbird) Beautiful Child (Silver Springs) Tusk (the Chain) Honey Hi (You make loving fun) I know I'm not wrong (I don't want to know) Brown Eyes (Oh Daddy) Storms (Gold Dust Woman)

This topic has been done to absolute death!

I realised that there had been a number of threads about cutting down Tusk to one disc.. what I couldn't recall was one compiling Tusk inspired by Rumours on a track-by-track basis. Perhaps there has been one- I couldn't find one on the archive.
If a part of cyberspace has died in vain that is very sad. I am thankful for the constructive criticism and suggestions received.

Nobody died. It's an interesting twist on an oft discussed topic.
