Default What's Your Favorite Sad Song?

This may be a recent topic, but I was watching that Elton John vid "I Guess That's Why They Call it The Blues" (or whatever it's really called lol!) this morning on VH-1 Classics and thinking about how sad the song and vid are and how much I used to LOVE this song when I was like 10 or so. Anyway, other sad songs I love:

"I've Been Away" by Kathleen Edwards on her new album "Back to Me" just rips my heart out. I literally tear up every time I listen to it.

I also think Neil Young has some of the saddest songs I've ever heard: Birds, I Believe in You, After the Goldrush--just to name a few.

"Blue" by Joni Mitchell gets me too.

So what are your favorite sad songs?

Good choice.

This reminds me..."All I Left Behind" by Emmylou from the Western Wall album she did with Linda Ronstadt make me cry every time I hear it.

How about Strong Hand by Emmylou Harris? She wrote it for Johnny Cash after June Carter Cash died. If that doesn't move you to tears, you have a heart of stone!

I'll think of a million more as soon as I post this.

Why- Annie Lennox
Blue- Lucinda Williams
Here Comes the Flood- Peter Gabriel
Wise Up- Aimee Mann
Never is a Promise- Fiona Apple
Moses (& all of Living With Ghosts)- Patty Griffin
Lover, You Should've Come Over- Jeff Buckley

ETA: Yeah, okay, I'm totally down with all the same's suggestion of Kate Bush's This Woman's Work, and I'll see his I've Changed My Plea to Guilty and raise with Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

The only one I can think of right now is Fire and Rain by James Taylor. Oh...Tears in Heaven (Eric Clapton) is pretty sad, too.

Hey, is that the one that goes "she ran calling wiiiiiiiiiiiildfire, she ran calling wiiiiiiiiiildfire..." and it's about a horse? That song is really sad, I haven't heard it in years, though. Fire and Rain is sad, too, Becky. I always forget songs until someone else says them. Anyway, I thought of Sometimes, by No Doubt:

Sometimes sunshine
Does not want to shine on me
And sometimes I find myself blind
At first I cannot see and then I see it's me

I chose a road when I was young
In search of fun temptations won
And all my soul I did surrender
If I had a chance to go back now
Would I redeem my moral vows
Or would I repeat for my own laughter

From now on, I will behave, but in
The back of my mind, I will be enslaved
Repeat

Sometimes I hide somewhat
Like a bulb behind a shade
And sometimes I ask myself why
Is it cause the lights are too bright
Or because my eyes are closed too tight

Sometimes I find myself blind
Don't use my brain don't use my mind
Distorted feelings always leading my way
But I must forgive myself
and let the past lay down to rest
And be prepared to face myself in another day

From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved

I LOVE Lucinda. I should've put my favorite song of all time of hers, Side of the Road. And yes, the live album is out in May. There's a great cover story on her in the new issue of Tracks.
