Oh my God, I had *NO* idea U2 was raking in that kind of money! 7 times more money per show than FM! I know they play much bigger venues generally... but still!

Poor FM had the second lowest sellout rate too... though that doesn't surprise me. They just didn't strike while the iron was hot following The Dance and keep that wave going. If they would have done more albums (especially a new album fairly quickly following The Dance), I think they would be in much better shape now. Yet they over saturated with the crazily long Say You Will tour. These poor kids just seem to make all the wrong decisions.

What's even sadder is that only 3-4 of those 9 "sellouts" are legit.

Top North American Tours for 2009

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla...sitemID=132737

Reuters reports that AC/DC and METALLICA were among the most popular draws on the North American concert circuit this year, according to data issued on Wednesday.

Pollstar editor Gary Bongiovanni said the overall concert business bucked the recession, mirroring a similar phenomenon at movie theaters. He said most people go to only one or two shows a year, and are willing to pay a premium for good seats.

AC/DC was at No. 5 with $77.9 million and METALLICA at No. 10 with $53.4 million.

01. U2: $123 million
02. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND: $94.5 million
03. ELTON JOHN and BILLY JOEL: $88 million
04. BRITNEY SPEARS: $82.5 million
05. AC/DC: $77.9 million
06. KENNY CHESNEY: $71.1 million
07. JONAS BROTHERS: $69.8 million
08. DAVE MATTHEWS BAND: $56.9 million
09. FLEETWOOD MAC: $54.5 million
10. METALLICA: $53.4 million

Default so, $54 mil or $62 mil?

Interesting that Pollstar reported Fleetwood Mac's totals were $54 million (the previous post in this thread) and that Billboard, in the first post of the thread, reported $62+million. 8 million dollars is quite a little accounting descrepency.
So, I think the long-held observation by someone here that these numbers, and all tour tallies, do get a spin put on them from just about all sources, is again proved to be the case. Of course, it could be that the $8 million plus difference could be that the final shows hadn't yet been added into the totals, though the tallies were presented as being complete.

Exactly. They're just numbers- numbers that can be easily manipulated and ultimately don't mean much of anything.

All that really, truly matters is the hard bottom-line for the band, promoters, and venues (which are confidential)... and the North America Unleashed dates were wholly underwhelming. If they were a huge success (or anything even close to on par with the '03 SYW dates), they'd be headlining sheds next summer. Instead, they're in negotiations to be, for all intents and purposes, a glorified opening act for Eagles next summer... because that's the only way they'd be able to get work next summer at a fee anywhere close to what they've been accustomed to/find acceptable. 2010 Baby!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to this date, the band's attendance* at the second performance at The Mohegan Sun in CT has never been reported. I went to their first show there, but skipped the second one 2 or 3 months later.
(* well, Stevie, Lindsey, Mick and John were there, so not the band's actual attendance!)
Is it either that it was kept confidential because so many comps were given, or because the actual sales would have reflected a deep, deep discounting of the tickets, otherwise, wouldn't we have read something? I know of a cpl of other CT Ledgies who went to both shows, but I couldn't see it for the same exact show, it wasn't about the money, even. One of them did write on The Ledge that the first show had a bigger crowd but that the 2nd MoSun show was even better than the first, which I did like.

I was at both shows and IMO the first show was better than the second one. But they were both great.

Billboard, 1-22-10, by Bob Allen

http://www.billboard.com/events/hot-...04061184.story

Topping the latest Hot Tours tally is Trans-Siberian Orchestra with box office stats arriving from 17 concerts reported by two promoters. Live Nation checks in with totals from six performances at three venues, with top numbers coming from Van Andel Arena (Jan. 2) in Grand Rapids, Mich. With 21,933 in attendance for two sold out shows, combined box office grosses were $1,042,455. San Antonio-based promoter Stone City Attractions reports over $4.4 million from 11 TSO shows in six arenas. The highest-grossing venue was the 18,500-seat AT&T Center in the promotion company's home town. The San Antonio arena earned $964,827 from two shows on Dec. 26. The updated grosses bring the Orchestra's overall winter tour grosses for both the East and West touring ensembles to $42.6 million to date.

Country star Brad Paisley lands at No. 2 on the Hot Tours list with the first 2010 totals reported from his American Saturday Night Tour that launched last year. Totals from 2009 ranked Paisley among Billboard's top 25 grossing tours of the year. This year's kick-off came at the AT&T Center in San Antonio (Jan. 7), and the top-grosser among the first six reported venues was the Xcel Energy Center (Jan. 16) in St. Paul, Minn. The sold-out concert grossed $759,690 with 13,856 fans in attendance.

Three Andrea Bocelli performances in November have been reported by U.K. promoter Kilimanjaro Live/AEG, ranking the tenor third among the current slate of Hot Tours. Performances at U.K. arenas in Birmingham, Liverpool and Glasgow brought in over $3.4 million (U.S.$) in box office grosses. Seven of Bocelli's fall 2009 concerts have now been reported, producing an overall gross of $10.8 million with over 80,000 tickets sold.

Melbourne, Australia's Rod Laver Arena reports four of the concert tours they hosted last Nov. and Dec., and all four appear on this week's Hot Tours rankings. Fleetwood Mac (Dec. 1-2) is No. 4 with a two-show gross of $2.9 million, and Nickelback ranks fifth based on totals from two shows at the arena on Nov. 16-17. Green Day's two performances on Dec. 14 and 16 land the rock band in the No. 6 spot, and native Aussie Keith Urban rounds out the arena's presence on the Hot Tours list with a performance on Dec. 12 placing him at No. 9.
