Default Battle of the Grammy Parties: Davis' Gala & Iovine's Wedding

Battle of the Grammy Parties: Clive Davis' Annual Gala & Jimmy Iovine's Wedding
2/2/2016 by Shirley Halperin

Liberty Ross and Jimmy Iovine attend the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 22, 2015 in Beverly Hills, California.

Music's second-biggest night is supersized this year, as the annual Clive Davis pre-Grammy gala (sponsored by the Recording Academy and honoring manager Irving Azoff with its Salute to Industry Icons Award) and Apple executive and Interscope Records founder Jimmy Iovine's wedding to Liberty Ross (ex-wife of movie director Rupert Sanders and sister of Gone Girl composer Atticus Ross) are both scheduled to start within an hour of each other on Valentine's Day. (The Grammy Awards air live on CBS on Monday, Feb. 15.)

While logistically, the nuptials at David Geffen's Beverly Hills mansion and the annual A-list soiree held at the Beverly Hilton are mere miles apart, industry veterans are quick to note the metaphorical distance: Azoff and Geffen were known archrivals dating back to the 1970s when the then-upstart rep and the erstwhile young label boss sparred over the Eagles, a feud well-documented in books and even the band's own 2013 doc, History of the Eagles.

From Aretha Franklin to Puff Daddy, Industry Heavyweights Share Inside Stories From Clive Davis' Legendary Pre-Grammy Gala

To be fair, the Grammy team did try to move Davis' sold-out party to Saturday, Feb. 13, but the hotel had a previously booked event that evening, while Iovine has told friends it was his bride-to-be's wish to get hitched on Valentine's Day. Still, allegiances to both music biz legends promise a busy night for the likes of Gwen Stefani (signed to Interscope by Iovine and managed by Azoff) and Stevie Nicks (Iovine's protege and former girlfriend and a client of Azoff's via Fleetwood Mac), who'll have to party-hop. (Fortunately, Davis' party has a reputation for running long past midnight.)

While some power players are coy about their Feb. 14 plans (cracks Universal Music Group chairman Lucian Grainge: "Jimmy knows where I'll be"), one insider holding a coveted invite to both tells THR: "A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime thing; Clive's happens every year." Indeed, even Irving and Shelli Azoff plan to stop by and congratulate the happy couple.

Jimmy Iovine & Liberty Ross Are Engaged

Reps for Davis, Iovine and Azoff did not comment, nor would they confirm the guest list, but The Hollywood Reporter has surveyed various music industry players and surmised that the evening will go something like this:

Attending the Iovine-Ross wedding: Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Mick Jagger, Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige, Tom Petty, Bono, Maroon 5 manager Jordan Feldstein, Lady Gaga

Attending the Clive Davis & The Recording Academy 2016 pre-Grammy Gala: Jon Bon Jovi, Jennifer Hudson, Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, Sony/ATV Chairman Martin Bandier, Meghan Trainor, Diane Warren, John Legend, Larry King, Christina Aguilera, Nile Rodgers

Pulling double-duty: Stevie Nicks, Gwen Stefani, Sony Music CEO Doug Morris, Apple's Tim Cook and Eddy Cue, Miley Cyrus, UMG Chairman Lucian Grainge, Diddy, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Patti Smith, Enrique Iglesias, members of Van Halen

Yeah, I don't think Stevie cares about Clive's party.

oh I dunno. She's known Irving forever, he was her solo manager (intervention notwithstanding) and he's managing FM right now. So politically, at least, she's smart to go to Clive's party where he's honoring Irving. He's influential in the industry. Stuff like being in with the powerbrokers does matter to her.

But I'm not sure there's not some tension between Azoff and Stevie's management. Even though (or maybe because) Azoff represents FM and LB.

No one knows if she is going. I don't think Stevie and Azoff actually parted ways. I mean they didn't have to formally end a management relationship. It's just that Frontline split up.

At any rate, just like Lindsey was not a cheerleader of Howard Kaufman, I've wondered if there is friction between the band and Stevie's individual managers. Heaven knows that it's incestuous. Tony Dimitriades has represented different people or formations at different times as well.

That's always struck me as somewhat surreal. I mean, a manager gets pretty involved with you and gets to know a lot about your life not just your career. Splitting with one always seems like it's about like splitting up with a bf or gf. And then there they are with one of your bandmates. And you know they know all your weak spots....

"On the big day itself, on February 14, the ceremony began within an hour of Davis' pre-Grammy gala a few miles away at the Beverly Hilton Hotel meaning a busy night for guests such as Gwen Stefani and Stevie Nicks who reportedly had to party-hop, according toBillboard.com."

So far this is the only picture I've seen today

She's so short. I always forget because she wears the boots but when she's sitting in that seat it looks like she needs a booster.

I watched it... Jackson Browne butchered Take it Easy (in my opinion) by forgetting the lyrics, and overall it really was a wasted opportunity, despite all the remaining Eagles being present.

Opinions and biases aside, I think Stevie would have been an excellent choice for a Glenn Frey tribute.
