Concert review: Stevie Nicks digs deep into ‘trunk of Gothic lost songs’

Going to see a good double-bill concert like the Pretenders and Stevie Nicks, then finding out at the door that the Pretenders won’t be playing after all is a little like buying a new pair of shoes, getting home and finding out there’s only one shoe in the box. It’s a pretty good shoe, but you sort of had your heart set on the pair.


With the Pretenders out of the picture (they also canceled a Wednesday night show in Miami due to singer Chrissie Hynde being sick), the spotlight was firmly on Nicks. The results were mixed.

The tour, billed as the 24K Gold Tour, seems like a good idea: Take a big star like Nicks and send her out to play some of her hits and a bunch of lost tunes from her “dark trunk of Gothic lost songs” and tell some stories.

Nicks certainly has stories, but that was sort of the problem with Thursday night’s show at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Some of her stories were enlightening and amusing, but boy, did they go on and on. Several were five minutes or so; at one point in the middle of the show, she went nearly 10 minutes without playing a song. And the tour has been going on since before Halloween and Nicks has been telling these stories every night for more than 40 shows, so they aren’t exactly spontaneous any more.

The other problem with the show was all those lost songs. Some of them were very good — “Enchanted,” “Starshine” and “Crying in the Night” certainly could have been big hits — but most of the audience didn’t recognize any of them. There was nearly an hour in the middle of the show in which she played a bunch of pretty songs, but nothing anyone knew by heart. Coupled with the momentum-killing stories, the show never really got rolling.

That’s a shame, because Nicks sounded really good, especially at the end of the show, when she ran through “Gold Dust Woman,” a hard-rocking “Edge of Seventeen,” “Rhiannon” and “Landslide.”

Spotted: Stevie Nicks on stage in the 24kt Gold Tour at the Arena

Stevie Nicks bought her 24kt Gold Tour to the Veterans Memorial Arena on March 23. Fans packed into the Arena for what turned out to be a solo show because Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders was ill. Nicks told the stories behind the hits that meant the most to her. This album focuses on Nicks on stage.

A Nick Outta Time!

The spirit of Stevie Nicks was strong Thursday night at the Veterans Memorial Area, manifested in fringe, flowing frocks, floppy 70’s hats and feathers worn by fans in homage to the goddess. As the crowds funneled into the densely-packed arena for the double bill 24K Gold Tour, an undercurrent of grumblings could be heard from those disappointed that The Pretenders would be a no-show. The cancellation was attributed to Chrissie Hynde’s illness. Tickets were refunded for those unwilling to journey through Nicks’ vast catalog.

After just wrapping 220 dates with Fleetwood Mac, Nicks told the crowd that she wasn’t touring to promote a new project and had no plans to play any new music. Instead, she invited the room to go on a journey through her “dark Gothic trunk of lost songs,” pausing between songs to share an anecdote or history attached to each one -admittedly some longer than others. Behind her, a multi-media screen displayed old photos, video montages and psychedelic graphics. Several songs, including a beautiful piece titled “New Orleans, had never been played live until this tour.

“New Orleans” was originally written by Nicks as a poem in response to Hurricane Katrina. Nicks was relaxing in her “beautiful Spanish-style home” when an emergency news bulletin about an approaching catastrophic storm caught her ear. She spent the next several days glued to the coverage and despite the gravity of the event, she decided to view it from a positive perspective. Yes, the damage would be horrific but the will rebuild. Yes, many people would lose their lives but many won’t. There would be hope and saviors to help restore the city’s vibrancy.

Nicks also shared a very personal “Prince story” about her first meeting with the Purple One and how her song “Stand Back” was conceived to “Little Corvette.” She was driving around LA the first time she recalls hearing his famous song from 1999. She began writing her own melody and lyrics to his track. Her husband at the time (the marriage lasted a mere three weeks) told Nicks she couldn’t write a song to a song belonging to another artist. “Yes, I can,” she said. ‘I’m doing it right now.”

It took some effort and more than a little courage for Nicks to reach out to Prince in the hopes of sharing her song with him. She managed to track him down in LA and he arrived at the studio 20 minutes later “in full Prince regalia.” Prince loved the track and agreed to play synthesizer and guitar on the track before driving off in what she remembers was a purple Camaro.

Besides music, Nicks said she always felt a special kinship to Prince. He looked out for her during her public struggles with substance abuse. After his death, she told the crowd she often spoke to him and when nerves would get the best of her before a show, she would say, “Prince, walk with me. And he does.”

Of course, Nicks was gracious in giving the hungry fans a healthy dose of the favorites including Stop Dragging my Heart Around (which was supposed to include a walk-in from Hynde to sing Tom Petty’s part but was adeptly handled by her guitarist), Gypsy, Bella Donna, Stand Back, Edge of Seventeen and Gold Dust Woman, complete with the trippy, tribal drum stomp, and a deserving encore of Rhiannon and Landslide.

While Hynde’s presence was missed, there was need only for one queen and Stevie Nicks reigned supreme, proving she is still larger than life with a voice and spirit that can fill any room.

Stevie Nicks, the most mystical woman in the history of rock'n'roll, is an icon in every sense of the word. Her voice? Instantly recognizable, possessing the ability to transport listeners to another dimension—one where black lace, white doves, and feathered top hats reign supreme. The Fleetwood Mac frontwoman is also known for her live shows, where unapologetic dance moves and onstage banter take centerstage.

Since kicking off in October of last year, the Grammy Award-winning singer's 24 Karat Gold Tour is still going strong. We caught the tail end of the run in Jacksonville, Florida, where she eased the crowd into her set with "Gold and Braid" before explaining that the supporting act, The Pretenders, weren't able to perform that night due to the fact that Chrissie Hynde had fallen ill. Nicks moved through classics such as "Gypsy", "Enchanted", and "New Orleans"—the latter which she revealed had been written about the post-Hurricane Katrina devastation.

Our favorite part of the night? When the "Dreams" mastermind admitted her fascination with the Twilight franchise to the crowd—an obsession that ran so deep it served as the inspiration for her track, "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)".

Between the storytelling and her encore (where she performed "Rhiannon" and "Landslide"), this show was a standout. "We will be back, Jacksonville," she said as she left the stage—a statement we'll be holding her to until the next time. Review: Stevie Nicks came to town, and it was awesome

It’s no secret that Stevie Nicks is a rock star. She was the frontwoman of the iconic rock outfit Fleetwood Mac, and has collaborated extensively with acts such as The Pretenders and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. On March 23, I had the absolute honor of seeing the musical icon at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, and it was everything I wanted it to be.

Sadly, The Pretenders (who were opening for Stevie) could not perform, as lead singer Chrissie Hyde was sick. This left some fans upset, but others stuck it out to see Stevie Nicks perform. Stevie opened with her song “Gold and Braid” and the audience went wild.

What I loved most about seeing Stevie Nicks was hearing her stories. Some individuals found this monotonous, but as a fan I found her transparency extremely genuine and unique. Most world-famous stars try to put on a show for their audience, but Stevie Nicks wanted to create an atmosphere that was filled with secret gems and intimacy between herself and the audience. It was special and beautiful.

Along with some songs that were pulled out of her gothic trunk of songs, she performed some of her classics, including “Gypsy,” “Stop Dragging My Heart,” “Gold Dust Woman,” “Edge of Seventeen,” “Rhiannon” and “Landslide.” Stevie also sounded better than ever. Her sound set up was crisp and streamlined. Nothing sounded fuzzy and none of the instruments overpowered her vocals.

Even though I saw her a week ago, I still can’t stop thinking of the show. In a world where there is a stark distance between the performer and the audience, it’s hard to feel connected to the artists we admire so much. Stevie Nicks blurred that line, and her relatability and profound sense of life and art left an impact on me that I will hold close to me for as long as I can.
