Favourites

That's The Way That Love Goes
One Take
Rock Away Blind
Seeds We Sow
Stars Are Crazy (After the third listen it's really growing on me)

.....so far.

Not to lower the tone but I just had a musgasm to That's The Way That Love Goes.

How are the guitar solo's on this one? I am enamored by their delivery on the live version.

The songwriting, lyrically and melodically, is top notch. If he had turned this in as a demo to Fleetwood Mac, I think they'd be like: OK, Linds, let's DO that double album. And then they'd lay down some real drums on these tracks.

For me the next biggest flaw is the he didn't sequence it a la Neil Young. Open with Seeds We Sow (electric) and close with Seeds We Sow (acoustic). THEN, I think it would be a contender. But as it is, I, in my first impressions, prefer the SOUND of UTS and the peaks (DYMM! WFY! LRD! BAR! RPTF!!) on GOS.

My faves so far (chronologically): TTWLG, SAC, WSCD, RAB, GTF, EOT. And I am not digging SSS, unfortunately comparing it to the fuller symphonic sound of the demo.

Looking forward to second impressions...

Christy, I know what you mean about feeling a catch, but this is the song that does that for me and the lyrics . . . so sublime. 'Waiting for my ocean to rise, long after I've gone. And your conversations all turn to lies and you wake up singing my songs.' The words almost sound vengeful, but they're not mean, because he's the one who needs saving.

Dee, with only the silent surf answering the call, I'm thinking he's talking to someone who lives by the ocean.

Michele
Perhaps! I like the song but I don't think it sounds vengeful... I really like the guitar part where it sounds echo-y in the background. Whatever technical word I'm trying to say. lol

And then there are the resplendent D.I.Y. innovations that put SWS into a class all its own.

Yes... Amazon.com has a couple of remixed/outtake tracks for download when you buy the mp3 version of Seeds We Sow.

I know! Dungeon?? Is that what they call his studio?

When She Comes Down - I agree that this one has an almost gospel quality. Of course, the layered vocals does indeed make you think of harmonies past. If there's one song for which you call Christine up and ask her to join you, this would be that one. The song has a rise and swell that's so uplifting that I almost resent Lindsey coming in and breaking it up. When I read the lyrics posted, I thought "now she's falling" meant falling in love. But the way Lindsey delivers that line in a halting, discordant fashion, I now understand that he means she's falling down the stairs and breaking her neck! I'd prefer not to have the flow of the song interrupted. But it's quite beautiful.
LOL -- I like it when he says she's dancing although it would have been even better if he'd said "now she's twirling".

One Take - Incredible. This guy will not die. His guitar will catch fire during the guitar solo on this song and he'll ascend straight into heaven. Put a halo on it. Oh and the way he drops it down at the end, weakening as the middle class disappears . . . as a statement, I find it much more effective than Peacekeeper or WTWCT. THAT'S RIGHT.
I thought of Peacekeeper too. Love the last line.

Geez, all these soldier references. Maybe being in Fleetwood Mac is like being in the army...

She Smiled Sweetly - Don't like the vocals. At one point he gets so husky and breathy it sounds like a porn call.

This is a masterpiece. I'm not going to say it's my favorite, because I still like GOS, weigh them both in total, and GOS might win out for me. But the peaks on this album reach an almost spiritual level. Reaching up to the crazy stars.

Michele
I'm not sure -- I really love GOS. I'll have to listen a few more times. I'm severely disappointed in the recorded version of Stars Are Crazy. I loved the live version - he puts more emotion in it. It reminds me of Shut Us Down and Say Goodbye -- the recorded versions were faster and both were so much more effective live in my opinion. But, overall this album doesn't disturb me like GOS does either.

Ok, so I just finished up my first listen of the album. First of all I have to disagree with all those who feel this is the 21st century Out Of The Cradle. I actually hear far more shades of Law & Order and especially Go Insane on this album.

As far as favorites, Illumination is the most delightfully quirky song... what a fun surprise! That song is like a sonic Shawshank Redemption... you never know what's going to happen next! I think it's the coolest thing on the whole damned album. My other big fav is Rock Away Blind... it's pure perfection. I very much like the updated version of She Smiled Sweetly too. As a whole, the album is beautifully arty and nicely paced.

Oddly enough the songs I assumed would be my favs are actually at the bottom of my list: Stars Are Crazy and When She Comes Down. They're fine songs, they just didn't grab me the way I expected them to.

All things totaled, I think this is a great little album and a real progression for Lindsey. Is it his best work? I don't think anything will ever eclipse Out Of The Cradle for me. But I definitely think this album easily stands shoulder to shoulder with his first 3.

I'm halfway through listening.
WOW.
I'm listening to When She Comes Down.
I love his voice. REALLY. Truly.
That is all (for now).

ETA: If he sings Gone Too Far live...I may not be responsible for my actions. It's right up there with everything else that's up there (ha!)

The only thing that reminds me of OOTC is Gone too far with that electric guitar popping up in the background. Other than that the album is very shimmery and even a bit quirkier like older LB albums. The album really picks up with Stars to When She Comes Down and into Rock Away Blind. I'm not crazy about One Take, but that doesn't matter. I love the vocals on this album. Seeds We Sow electric version is just great. It's dazzling and a good break from all the fingerpicking on the album....

Sorry louie, but OOTC is his third...

I agree with the fact that it has nothing to do with OOTC, but for me, neither with the first two. I really think thas album stands on his own and is a step further in his development. And it sounds very contemporary 2011. Impressive.

I'm blown away. This is simply breathtaking!

In Our Own Time, That's The Way Love Goes, Stars Are Crazy, When She Comes Down, Rock Away Blind and End of Time are standout tracks for me. I'm in love!

Gone Too Far makes me nostalgic for some old school Fleetwood Mac like whoa. I can just hear Christine and Stevie's harmonies on that song.
