Default Lindsey Praised on Facebook

The Beach Boys 101 : The Band The Music The History. This is the name of the Facebook Page. I am not sure who runs it but they mostly post things related to the Beach Boys and their members but on occasion they post about other artists too. It's a pretty spot on analysis even if doesn't really say anything new.

Happy 73rd Birthday To Lindsey Buckingham. To This Day He Remains An
Underrated Genius Of Popular Music :

***With the loss of so many legendary musical figures in the past few years we will be celebrating the legacy and impact of certain musicians (whether they have anything to do with The Beach Boys or not,) that have made a unique and indelible mark on music history.***

Lindsey’s 73rd birthday started out with some troubling news today that he had to cancel his European tour due to an undisclosed illness (after a London show that got rave reviews. ) We all definitely wish him a speedy and full recovery.

To this day it’s still shocking that the remaining members of Fleetwood Mac had the nerve to fire Lindsey Buckingham from the band. When most mainstream music fans think of the group he isn’t the first name you think of.
Obviously Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and even bandleader Mick Fleetwood himself might overshadow him as far as popularity goes. But all three of those people owe what they have become today to Lindsey.
Let’s start with Stevie Nicks.

No one can deny her talent as a singer, performer, and a songwriter. Yet if not for Lindsey we might not even know who she is. Let’s not forget that when Mick Fleetwood wanted Lindsey to join Fleetwood Mac the band just wanted Buckingham. It was Lindsey who gave the band the ultimatum that it was either Lindsey and Stevie as a team or neither of them at all. Sadly Stevie has seemed to have forgotten that.

Christine McVie also owes much of her success to Lindsey. Prior to Buckingham joining the band she wrote a number of great songs that never broke through onto the radio because they were missing a certain punch. It would be Lindsey’s genius and his craft as a producer that would turn many of her songs into radio hits.

Yet sadly she didn’t speak up to have Lindsey’s back. Not realizing she had much more muscle than she thought. Had she spoke up and boycotted Lindsey’s firing it’s hard to imagine the band trying to move on without her.

Then of course there’s Mick Fleetwood. He’s forgotten what the state of his band was in before he met Lindsey Buckingham. Not only was he in huge financial trouble, once guitar player Bob Welch left the band the record label Warner/Reprise was pretty much ready to drop them. That coupled with having to deal with another band of imposters claiming they were Fleetwood Mac.

It’s not a stretch to say that Lindsey Buckingham not only saved Fleetwood Mac, but also Mick Fleetwood’s legacy.

Unfortunately the three musicians above have seemed to forgot where they would be now if not for Lindsey Buckingham.

Today Lindsey is celebrating his 73rd birthday. And we should all be thankful that he is still with us. He’s endured a very tough few years since his ridiculous dismissal from Fleetwood Mac in 2018.

It’s not surprising that the stress he’s endured led to him having chest pains that led to open heart surgery. (Both his father and older brother died of heart attacks.) There was also a scare that he damaged his vocal cords so badly during the surgery that he would never be able to sing again. Thank goodness that did not happen. And if that wasn’t enough his long suffering wife Kristen filed for divorce a couple of years ago .

It wouldn’t be surprising if his marriage problems have to do with his history with Stevie Nicks. No matter what Buckingham or Nicks say about each other it’s pretty obvious that they are soulmates. Imagine being Lindsey’s wife having to hear every single day about his ex girlfriend in one way or another. That has to be difficult to deal with.

Also having to deal with the pain from her husband that his former band chose her over him. It would be nice to see both Lindsey and Stevie find some type of closure before it’s too late.

Like always though Lindsey has proven he’s a survivor. He not only recovered from his open heart surgery, he also released what may be his best solo record (Lindsey Buckingham Self Titled) since his 1992 masterpiece “Out Of The Cradle”.

He was back on the road playing solo shows to many of his biggest crowds as a solo artist. Displaying his unique talents as a guitar player, one of the greatest on the planet, (showing that you can be just as innovative using your fingers instead of a pick when he plays,) performer and a singer. Yet as mentioned earlier he is unable to finish his most recent tour due to illness.

But we all know where Lindsey’s true genius lies and that’s in the studio. Just like the legendary Todd Rundgren it almost seems like pop music was too easy for him to make.

After Fleetwood Mac released the mega selling “Rumours” he could’ve easily led the band to make another few records just like that. Yet that’s exactly what he didn’t do.

To this day he’s still not given the respect he deserves for taking Fleetwood Mac in a totally different direction with the “Tusk” record. Or even the brilliant work he did on the “Tango In The Night”, and “Say You Will” albums which best showcase his brilliance as a producer. Also his ability to take songs that Stevie and Christine have written and make them great.

The “Tusk” album especially where in the end he took slack from both the record company and the band. Yet today you could easily say that may be the Fleetwood Mac album that has truly aged the best, and continues to showcase the band as artists instead of pop stars. A true artistic statement and an excellent piece of work of a band in their prime. Easily one of the greatest double albums ever made !

Yet even when Lindsey left the band in 1987, and when he was fired in 2018 Fleetwood Mac has always shown how truly important he is to that band. Both times it’s taken not one guitar player, but two instead, to try and replace the irreplaceable. And even then the band falls short without him.

It’s also nice to see that Lindsey has embraced his solo work. Ever since the release of his “Under The Skin” album in 2012 he’s remained very prolific (at least for his standards) at releasing new material. No longer taking many years to release new solo albums like he did in the past. Always the perfectionist he was afraid to let the music go. It’s nice to know now that no longer seems to be the case.

At 73 years old Lindsey has nothing left to prove. He’s truly done it all. For those of us who have followed his career and what he has contributed to music history know his value and worth. He doesn’t need to be the most famous musician in the world. He’s just one of the best.
Hope you feel better soon Lindsey !

*** One other thing many people don’t know about is what a huge fan George Harrison was of Lindsey. In a recent interview with radio host John Fugelsang, Roy Orbison’s kids stated that George wanted Lindsey to replace Roy In The Traveling Wilburys after Orbison died of a heart attack. Yet for some reason it never happened. Either with Lindsey declining the invitation or George never ending up asking him.***

Default Thanks for this tribute

Very nice tribute. I don't agree that Stevie and Lindsey are soulmates (well, maybe musical soulmates) and I think Lindsey and Kristen never did actually go through with their divorce. I wish the public would give Lindsey the accolades he deserves - but perhaps as the years go by he, like Tusk, will be seen in hindsight as the one that aged the best.

That read so much like what folks call ‘fan fiction.’ Stevie and Lindsey are soulmates? Yeah, right. His heart attack brought on by stress due to being fired? As opposed to family history? And since when are people not allowed to be fired on the remote possibility they might have a heart attack? I’ll have to remember that one if my boss ever threatens to fire me. My irritation is not directed at Lindsey, but to people who really believe this crap. If Lindsey really thought FM was to blame for his heart attack, he wouldn’t be spreading the word he’s open to returning.

The one thing I totally agree with from this story is that Christine could have stopped his firing. For whatever reasons, she didn’t.

Ha, I think, maybe that was deliberate

The heroine of my life HAS NO BACKBONE. Just another money ho, like 98% of the world.
