Sigh - this sucks...

I had hope....but not so much now

He was a Hitler youth you know....urg...and is way conservative...there goes any chance of the church catching up with the world...

Maybe St. Malachy was right....the end is near (of the church at least)

Question A German Pope?

Okay, that's weird to me, but I'm not Catholic, so...

Hitler youth?

Why can't the people vote? Laws, I guess.

yeah - ancient laws of the church....etc etc etc....

And yeah - I'm a bit surprised that this pope is another Eastern European...we were pulling for the guy from Nigeria but oh well...

And yeah - apparently Ratzinger was part of Hitler Youth...

Don't know much about this pope, but about Hitler Youth: pretty much every child in that time was part of it, you didn't have much choice, really. Well, that's how I understand it.
Just heard someone on tv say you could see him as a transitional pope, since he's already 78 years old.
I thought it was pretty moving to see, even though I'm no catholic myself.

I'm disappointed too, Deanna, but his reign will likely be short. I figured they'd elect someone older.

He was like six years old I think at the beginning of it. So, I am not too concerned about that. What I am concerned about is he tinks homosexuality is tantamount to a disease and that women should be in the shadows - both are things Christ never said. Such is the state of the RCC.

Default not to be disrespectful, but...

as a historian and religious scholar, i am destroyed by his election. looking at it from a secular point of view as i am neither catholic nor religious in general, he has proven himself time and again as an anti-semite who holds extremely prejudiced opinions regarding all who do not fit neatly into his conservative catholic mould. i am quite sure that the only guidance he will be providing will lead the catholic church farther from loving its neighbor, though i am hoping for the opposite. mel gibson must be in ecstasy...

And he's not a fan of inter-religious dialouge I'm very disapointed at this election...hopefully the Episcopalians will welcome me with open arms

And I know the Hitler Youth thing is a small mark on his future - he was nevere involved in an atrocities or anything....

but still I'm a bit bugged by it

I was thinking about the anti-semite view of him and I am not convinced by it. I think his comment on which, I think, this is based is just Catholic Dogma in that it is an extension of "only through Christ can one be saved." There could be other comments he made that I do not know about, but that one does not strike me a particularly anti-semitic. From the article Deanna posted a link to:

Quote:
He upset many Jews with a statement in 1987 that Jewish history and scripture reach fulfilment only in Christ — a position denounced by critics as “theological anti-semitism”. He made more enemies among other religions in 2000, when he signed a document, Dominus Jesus, in which he argued: “Only in the Catholic church is there eternal salvation”.
I just do not think that is that bad or really even bad at all in the sense that it promoted hatred toward Jews.

I find far more concern in the following from the same link:

Quote:
His condemnations are legion — of women priests, married priests, dissident theologians and homosexuals, whom he has declared to be suffering from an “objective disorder”.
and that fact that his own country apparently cannot stand him.

But, to each their own for not liking him as I am sure we "all" agree we do not like him.

It would be nice if someone who didn't have their head up their ass was elected pope. But, in all reality, who the hell cares?

I guess if I cared my opinion would be:

The catholic church only exists because of its dogma and its control over its worshippers. So, of course, the cardinals, bishops, etc. want nothing to do with any concept of change. If they change, they will, over time, cease to exist. I think that will happen if they DON'T change as well. However, as long as there is a huge mass of ignorant people they should be fine for another hundred years or so. I think technological and scientific advances with eventually wipe them out. It'll take time, though.

Now about Miss Benedict the XVI. This dude is 78, so hopefully he'll croak soon and maybe within those few years (the shorter the better) the cardinals will decided to elect someone more enlightened.
