Lloyd Webber has also been called a hack quite a number of times, too, though. I just watch (or listen to) what I like, and ignore what the ever-so-jaded critics say.

I just don't like Schumacher. There's nothing distinct about him, really, and I never really liked any of his movies.

No, you're right. I was thinking of the fans of the show, they were mad that Butler got the role of the Phantom. Sorry!

I'm not ashamed to admit this... 'Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory' is at the top of my favorite movies list.

I love it, too. I'm sure Johnny Depp will be magnificent, but Gene Wilder is, and always will be, Willy Wonka to me.

Exclamation I must be ol' fashioned...

because I would rather watch a movie made before 1970 than most modern movies...

Hell, We (Deb & myself) both fell asleep during LOTR!!!!

There are fans who are still furious that Michael Crawford didn't get the role!

I tend to ignore those people, too.

Well, if I was a huge fan, I'd be rather pissed. I mean, it's like making The Bad Seed without Patty McCormack.

And they are actually remaking that one.

The Phantom Of The Opera sound interesting and Joel Schumacher can be a good director when he wants to (like in Tigerland), but my favourite version of the story will always be the one by Brian De Palma.

I originally cringed when I read they were making a new version, simply because I love the original so much and tend to think nothing could ever match it, but I love Burton and I love Depp, and I love the story... so I think I'll be pleased by the final result.

Plus, I don't think they're trying to encroach upon the memory of the first film, but rather to explore the source material from a different angle... and that's a worthy enough reason to revisit the Chocolate Factory.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phantom of the Pradise with Jessica Harper is one of my favorites! That's still DePalma's best film, along with Sisters, IMO.

Darling, I don't carry grudges; I've already forgotten about it.

Have you heard of Savage Grace with Julianne Moore? That should be one chilling movie.

Well then WHY THE HELL DIDN'T LUPONE get Evita instead of the oh so vocally talented Madonna - the key of C - I mean REALLY

Seriously, I think Webber has some great stuff and he has some not so great stuff. I think his style of lavish production influenced Broadway for two decades and will go down in history as such. Do I think he is a S. Sondheim (who is credited with influencing Broadway in essentially the same time period) - no, he is not. But, Sondheim is not without his critics and he in some ways is not that great, at least to me. I like a traditional musical structure, which generally includes a chorus Sadly, Webber's last two that I saw "Whistle Down the Wind" and "Beautiful Game" were IMO good reaches into realism that essentially got ignored. So, goes life.

As for the new Phantom, I saw a lot of it this last weekend (they were playing it as a promo in Bloomingdales ) - the guy's voice is wrong for the part and he cannot sing it, much less keep up with her, and her voice is not that great (but it is like Brightman's voice - good). But, maybe when I see the whole thing, I will like it better. Who knows? You can go here for a trailer http://phantomthemovie.warnerbros.com/

As long as it's nothing as bad as Planet of the Apes, I'll be happy. If they stick to the book, it should be a classic.
