Default Most successful bands of all time

Ranking of top selling bands of all time-- Fleetwood Mac is the only band with women members in the entire list. Chris and Stevie are the only female faces.

Alec believes it's not coincidence that they

I think he's right. It's a whole conflation of gender and sex in a record store near you.

I love seeing them amongst such bands as that. It's great. What gets on my nerves is the fact that they have sold WAY more than 100 million records, more than 150 million even and yet nobody ever states that. Yes they've sold a CERTIFIED 49.5 million album in the US but the RIAA certification system is lazy beyond belief. They've sold over 65 million albums in the US alone, and that's forgetting the millions of singles they've sold.

Hi James89,
I have a question for you (or anyone else for that matter). I read somewhere The Dance was the fifth highest selling live album of all time. I've also read some other things that suggest that isn't the case. Can you or anyone give me a definitive list of top 10 best selling live records? Cheers

Ok, so I found a forum that discusses this and this is what I've found:

The Top 5 best-selling live albums in the US:

- Garth Brooks Double Live - 20xPlatinum
- Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band Live 1975-1985 - 13xPlatinum
- Eric Clapton Unplugged - 10xPlatinum
- The Eagles Eagles Live - 7xPlatinum
- Peter Frampton Frampton Comes Alive - 6xPlatinum

And then The Dance is joint 6th alongside Nirvana's MTV unplugged in New York and Live Bullet by Bob Seger.

Again, any wrong information don't blame me. I just got it from a forum.

Cheers. I'm guessing the issue concerning The Dance being #5 or not hinges on whether unplugged albums count as 'live' albums. I'd say yes they technically do. Anyway, its good a FM album is so notable.

Happy New Year all!

Ole Alec is usually right about music matters. But
be careful agreeing with him on most anything else.

Fleetwood Mac is a gender bender of a band. As mentioned,
the women have men's names. The lead guitarist name sounds
womanly. And he's a rather petite fellow. Then there's Mick and
John's wedding photo. Just buying the album Rumours is risking
a chance at an STD.

But hey, I'm not judging them.

I've told this story before but it's a good one.

It was 1974-1975, and my dorm mates and I were big fans of the Bob Welch era FM. When the "White Album" came out we purchased and listened, and thought this new female guitarist Lindsey was incredible, and the new male singer Stevie didn't contribute all that much except some good lead and harmony vocals.

Imagine our surprise when we got to the concert to find that Stevie was the woman and Lindsey the man. I don't think I've ever really gotten over the surprise.

Probably the fact that on the album back cover Stevie's and Lindsey's names had been swapped didn't help.
However the first time I've actually heard about Fleetwood Mac in high-school I also misunderstood that Lindsey was the guitarist woman and Stevie was the vocalist man. Thankfully after that I stumbled upon VH1 100 greatest rock band of all time or something similar and there one of the rockstar they interviewed said "Stevie Nicks was the most beautiful woman you'd ever seen" and I finally understood.

And of course there was the magazine article (or whatever) that had their names backwards in the caption for that promo pic. That certainly didn't help the confusion!

Nor did Lindsey's feminine mannerisms!

Love this story

I think every fan has the initial Stevie/Lindsey confusion, it's part of the process!

Now that we're questioning Lindsey's gender. If he/she
were a man he should take charge of this Stevie situation.
Like "you're with us, or against us".

Not being able to make a decision proves he's a woman.
At least that's what ole Alec says.

I'm slightly confused myself. Did you all think they were singing each other's songs?
